🔧 Forester - Fuel Cap Replacement

Replacing the fuel cap on your Forester is one of the easiest repairs you can do. A worn or loose fuel cap can cause fuel vapor leaks, fuel smell, or an emissions-related check engine light.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 5-10 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🚭 Do not smoke or use open flames near the fuel filler area.
  • 🧤 Gasoline vapors are flammable, so work in a well-ventilated area.
  • ⛽ Make sure the engine is off before opening the fuel door.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel cap - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🚗 Park your Forester on level ground and turn the engine off.
  • 🅿️ Set the parking brake.
  • ⏱️ If you just refueled, wait a minute before removing the cap so vapor pressure can settle.
  • 🧤 Put on nitrile gloves. Nitrile gloves help keep fuel residue off your skin.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Fuel Door

  • Use your hand to open the fuel door on the left rear side of your Forester.
  • No tool is needed for this step.
  • Work slowly around fuel vapors.

Step 2: Remove the Old Fuel Cap

  • Use your hand to turn the old fuel cap counterclockwise until it comes loose.
  • Pull the fuel cap away from the filler neck. The filler neck is the metal tube where fuel enters the tank.
  • No torque spec applies because the cap tightens by hand only.

Step 3: Remove the Cap Tether

  • Use your hand to slide the old fuel cap tether off the fuel door hook or mounting point.
  • The tether is the small plastic strap that keeps the cap attached to the vehicle.
  • If the tether is stiff, gently twist it by hand instead of pulling hard.

Step 4: Install the New Fuel Cap Tether

  • Use your hand to attach the new fuel cap tether to the same fuel door hook or mounting point.
  • Make sure the tether is not twisted and does not get pinched when the fuel door closes.

Step 5: Install the New Fuel Cap

  • Place the new fuel cap onto the filler neck by hand.
  • Turn the cap clockwise until it clicks.
  • Subaru-style fuel caps should be tightened until you hear several clicks, which means the seal is seated.
  • No torque wrench is used. Tighten by hand only.
  • Do not overtighten past normal clicks.

Step 6: Close the Fuel Door

  • Use your hand to close the fuel door fully.
  • Check that the tether is tucked inside and not trapped between the door and body.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start your Forester and confirm there is no fuel smell near the fuel door.
  • ✅ If a check engine light was caused by a loose or leaking fuel cap, it may take several drive cycles to turn off on its own.
  • ✅ If the check engine light stays on after a few days of normal driving, scan for codes. A common loose-cap-related code is an evaporative emissions leak code.
  • ✅ No infotainment reset, battery registration, scan-tool command, or relearn procedure is required for fuel cap replacement.
