📋 Before You Begin

• Park your Tucson on level ground.
• Shift to Park and set the parking brake.
• Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key or keep the smart key away from the start button.
• Open the fuel door using the fuel door release inside the vehicle.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Fuel Door

• Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
• Use your hand to open the fuel door after releasing it from inside your Tucson.
• Look at how the old cap tether is attached. The tether is the small plastic strap that keeps the cap from getting lost.
• Take a quick photo first.

Step 2: Remove the Old Fuel Cap

• Turn the old fuel cap counterclockwise by hand.
• Keep turning until it comes off the fuel filler neck.
• Let the cap hang by the tether if it is still attached.
• Do not use pliers or other tools on the cap, because they can damage the filler neck area.

Step 3: Detach the Fuel Cap Tether

• Use your fingers to slide the tether loop off its small retaining post on the fuel door area.
• If the tether is stiff, gently twist it by hand while pulling it off.
• Do not pry hard on the fuel door or filler housing.

Step 4: Inspect the Filler Neck

• Use your eyes to check the metal fuel filler neck where the cap seals.
• Look for rust, dirt, cracks, or old rubber stuck to the sealing surface.
• Wipe only with a clean dry glove if needed. Do not push debris into the filler opening.
• The sealing surface is the flat area where the cap gasket presses to hold vapor pressure.

Step 5: Attach the New Fuel Cap Tether

• Use your fingers to place the new fuel cap tether loop onto the retaining post.
• Make sure the tether is not twisted or pinched by the fuel door.
• Check that the cap can reach the filler neck easily.

Step 6: Install the New Fuel Cap

• Place the new fuel cap squarely onto the fuel filler neck by hand.
• Turn the cap clockwise by hand.
• Keep turning until it clicks at least one time.
• No torque wrench is used for this part. Tighten only until the built-in ratchet clicks.
• Torque: tighten by hand until cap clicks
• One to three clicks is normal.

Step 7: Close the Fuel Door

• Use your hand to close the fuel door until it sits flush with the body.
• Check that the tether does not prevent the door from closing.

• Start your Tucson and confirm there is no fuel smell around the fuel door.
• If the Check Engine Light was caused by a loose or leaking cap, it may take several drive cycles to turn off by itself.
• A drive cycle means the vehicle is driven, parked, cooled down, and driven again while the computer runs emissions checks.
• If you want the light cleared immediately, use an OBD2 scan tool to erase stored EVAP codes after confirming the cap is sealed.
