🔧 Wrangler - Fuel Cap Replacement
Replacing the fuel cap on your Wrangler is a very simple repair. A worn, cracked, loose, or missing fuel cap can cause fuel vapor leaks and may trigger an EVAP-related check engine light.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 5-10 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work in a well-ventilated area away from open flames, smoking, or sparks.
- ⚠️ Do not replace the fuel cap while refueling.
- ⚠️ If fuel smell is strong or fuel is leaking, stop and inspect before driving.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses

- Fuel cap - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Wrangler on level ground and turn the engine off.
- Set the parking brake.
- Let the area around the fuel filler cool if the vehicle has been sitting in hot sun.
- If the check engine light is on from a loose cap, it may take several drive cycles to turn off after replacement.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Fuel Filler Door
- Use your hand to open the fuel filler door on the driver-side rear quarter panel.
- Put on nitrile gloves to keep fuel residue off your hands.
Step 2: Remove the Old Fuel Cap
- Use your hand to turn the fuel cap counterclockwise until it comes loose.
- A fuel cap seals the fuel tank opening and helps the EVAP system hold pressure.
- If your old cap has a tether strap, gently pull the tether end off its retaining point by hand.
- Do not force brittle plastic.
Step 3: Inspect the Filler Neck
- Use your safety glasses and look at the metal fuel filler neck where the cap seals.
- Check for dirt, rust flakes, cracks, or damaged sealing surfaces.
- Wipe away loose dirt with a clean dry cloth if needed.
- Do not push debris into the fuel tank.
Step 4: Install the New Fuel Cap
- Use your hand to place the new fuel cap squarely onto the filler neck.
- Turn the cap clockwise until it clicks several times.
- The clicking means the cap is tightened enough and the seal is seated.
- Torque: Hand-tighten only until the cap clicks; no torque wrench is used.
Step 5: Secure the Tether
- If the new cap has a tether, use your hand to attach it to the original retaining point.
- Make sure the tether does not get pinched when the fuel door closes.
Step 6: Close the Fuel Filler Door
- Use your hand to close the fuel filler door firmly.
- Confirm the fuel cap is not interfering with the door.
✅ After Repair
- Start your Wrangler and check that there is no fuel smell around the filler area.
- If the check engine light was caused by a loose or leaking fuel cap, it may clear itself after a few normal trips.
- If the light stays on after several drive cycles, scan for EVAP trouble codes.
- If you recently cleared codes with a scan tool, the EVAP monitor may need normal driving time to complete.
