๐ง RAV4 - Fuel Cap Replacement
Replacing the fuel cap on your RAV4 is a very quick beginner repair. The fuel cap seals the fuel tank system, and a worn or loose cap can trigger an EVAP leak warning or check engine light.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 5-10 minutes
โ ๏ธ Safety & Precautions
- โ ๏ธ Work with the engine off and the vehicle parked safely.
- ๐ฅ Do not smoke or use open flames near the fuel filler area.
- ๐งค Fuel vapors can irritate skin and eyes, so wear gloves and safety glasses.
- ๐ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
๐ง Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
๐ฉ Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Fuel filler cap - Qty: 1
๐ Before You Begin
- Park your RAV4 on level ground in a well-ventilated area.
- Turn the engine off and remove the key/fob from the vehicle area.
- Make sure there are no sparks, flames, or smoking materials nearby.
- If the check engine light is on due to a loose cap, it may take several drive cycles to clear after replacement.
๐จ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Fuel Door
- Use your hand to open the fuel door on the left rear side of your RAV4.
- No tool is needed for this step.
- Open gently to avoid bending the hinge.
Step 2: Remove the Old Fuel Cap
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Turn the fuel cap counterclockwise by hand until it releases.
- A counterclockwise turn means turning left, like loosening a bottle cap.
- Let the cap hang by its tether if it is still attached.
Step 3: Remove the Fuel Cap Tether
- Use your fingers to slide or unclip the small tether loop from the fuel door or fuel filler area.
- The tether is the small plastic strap that keeps the cap attached to the vehicle.
- No tool is usually needed; do not pry with metal tools near the fuel filler.
- Take your time with old plastic.
Step 4: Inspect the Fuel Filler Neck
- Use your eyes to check the metal fuel filler neck where the cap seals.
- Look for dirt, damage, rust, or pieces of the old cap seal.
- If needed, wipe the sealing surface gently with a clean dry cloth.
- Do not push debris into the fuel filler opening.
Step 5: Install the New Fuel Cap Tether
- Use your fingers to attach the new cap tether to the original tether point.
- Make sure the tether is not twisted and does not block the fuel door from closing.
Step 6: Install the New Fuel Cap
- Place the new fuel cap onto the filler neck by hand.
- Turn the cap clockwise until you hear or feel several clicks.
- Clockwise means turning right, like tightening a bottle cap.
- No torque wrench is used; the clicking mechanism sets the correct tightness.
- Stop after it clicks several times.
Step 7: Close the Fuel Door
- Use your hand to close the fuel door fully.
- Make sure it sits flush with the body panel.
โ After Repair
- Start your RAV4 and make sure there is no strong fuel smell around the fuel door.
- If the check engine light was caused by the old cap, drive normally for a few days; the EVAP monitor may need several trips to confirm the leak is fixed.
- If the warning stays on after several drive cycles, the system should be scanned for EVAP diagnostic trouble codes.
- No infotainment reset, battery registration, ADAS calibration, or scan-tool command is required for the cap replacement itself.
