๐Ÿ”ง Tacoma - Fuel Cap Replacement

Replacing the fuel cap on your Tacoma is a simple beginner repair. A worn, loose, or missing fuel cap can cause fuel vapor leaks and may trigger a check engine light for an evaporative emissions leak.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 5-10 minutes

โš ๏ธ Safety & Precautions

  • ๐Ÿ”ฅ Work away from flames, cigarettes, sparks, or hot work lights.
  • โ›ฝ Do not overfill the tank before doing this repair.
  • ๐Ÿงค Gasoline vapors can irritate skin and eyes, so wear gloves and safety glasses.
  • ๐Ÿ”‹ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

๐Ÿ”ง Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

๐Ÿ”ฉ Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel tank cap - Qty: 1

๐Ÿ“‹ Before You Begin

  • ๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ Park your Tacoma on level ground and shift to Park.
  • ๐Ÿ”ฅ Turn the engine off and let the area around the fuel door cool if the truck was just driven.
  • ๐Ÿงค Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • ๐Ÿ“Œ A fuel cap seals the fuel tank so fuel vapors stay contained in the evaporative emissions system.

๐Ÿ”จ Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Fuel Door

  • Use your hand to open the fuel filler door on the driver-side rear quarter area.
  • No tool is needed for this step.
  • Keep dirt away from the filler neck.

Step 2: Remove the Old Fuel Cap

  • Use your hand to turn the old fuel cap counterclockwise until it comes loose.
  • Let the cap hang by its tether if it is still attached.
  • The tether is the small plastic strap that keeps the cap from falling away from the truck.

Step 3: Remove the Fuel Cap Tether

  • Use your hand to gently slide or pull the tether end off its retaining post on the fuel door area.
  • If the tether is stiff, wiggle it gently instead of yanking it.
  • Do not use a screwdriver, because it can scratch paint or crack the plastic retainer.

Step 4: Inspect the Fuel Filler Neck

  • Use your safety glasses and visually inspect the fuel filler neck where the cap seals.
  • Look for dirt, rust, dents, or pieces of old rubber seal.
  • If needed, use a clean dry shop towel by hand to wipe the sealing surface.
  • A clean seal prevents vapor leaks.

Step 5: Install the New Fuel Cap Tether

  • Use your hand to press the new fuel cap tether onto the retainer post.
  • Make sure the tether is fully seated and moves freely.
  • The cap should hang without pulling tightly when the fuel door is open.

Step 6: Install the New Fuel Cap

  • Use your hand to place the new fuel cap onto the filler neck.
  • Turn the cap clockwise until it clicks.
  • For your Tacoma, tighten until you hear at least one clear click.
  • No torque spec applies because this is a hand-tightened ratcheting cap.

Step 7: Close the Fuel Door

  • Use your hand to close the fuel filler door gently.
  • Make sure the fuel cap tether is not pinched in the door.

โœ… After Repair

  • โœ… Start your Tacoma and make sure there is no fuel smell around the fuel door.
  • ๐Ÿ” If the check engine light was on because of a loose or leaking cap, it may take several drive cycles to turn off by itself.
  • ๐Ÿงฐ A drive cycle means the truck is started, driven, warmed up, and shut off normally.
  • ๐Ÿ“Ÿ If the check engine light stays on after several days, use an OBD2 scan tool to check for stored evaporative emissions codes.
  • ๐Ÿ’ก Common fuel-cap-related codes include P0440, P0441, P0442, P0455, or P0456.

๐Ÿ’ฐ DIY vs Shop Cost
