How to Replace the Fuel Cap Dust Plug on a 2018 Ford Mustang
Step-by-step Easy Fuel capless filler guide with tools, parts, and safety tips
🔧 Mustang - Fuel Cap Replacement
Your Mustang uses Ford’s capless Easy Fuel system, so there is no traditional screw-on fuel cap to replace from the factory. If you are replacing a missing aftermarket fuel plug, dust cap, or the Easy Fuel filler neck cover/door area, this is a simple beginner-friendly job.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 5-15 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🔥 Work in a well-ventilated area away from flames, sparks, cigarettes, or hot tools.
- 🧤 Gasoline vapors are flammable, so do not use power tools near the open filler area.
- 🚗 Turn the engine off before working around the fuel filler.
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Clean microfiber towel
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Easy Fuel dust cap or fuel filler plug - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Mustang on level ground and turn the engine off.
- 🧯 Keep the work area clear of open flames or anything that can spark.
- 🧼 Wipe dirt away from the fuel filler door area with a clean microfiber towel before opening it.
- 💡 Use a flashlight to inspect the capless fuel filler opening. A capless filler has spring-loaded flaps instead of a twist-on cap.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Fuel Door
- Use your hand to press and release the rear edge of the fuel door.
- The fuel door should pop open.
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses before touching the filler area.
- Keep dirt out of the filler.
Step 2: Inspect the Easy Fuel Filler Opening
- Use a flashlight to look into the filler opening.
- Check that the metal flap inside the filler neck is closed and sitting flat.
- If dirt is around the outside, wipe only the outer area with a clean microfiber towel.
- Do not push cloth, fingers, or tools into the fuel filler opening.
Step 3: Remove the Old Dust Cap or Plug
- If your Mustang has an added dust cap or fuel filler plug, pull it straight out by hand.
- If it has a tether, unclip the tether from the fuel door area by hand.
- No torque spec applies because this part is hand-installed only.
Step 4: Install the New Dust Cap or Plug
- Line up the new Easy Fuel dust cap or fuel filler plug with the filler opening.
- Push it in gently by hand until it seats evenly.
- If the part has a tether, clip the tether to the same fuel door area attachment point.
- Do not force it. If it does not fit easily, remove it and check alignment.
Step 5: Close the Fuel Door
- Use your hand to swing the fuel door closed.
- Press it until it latches flush with the body.
- Use a clean microfiber towel to wipe fingerprints from the paint.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Start your Mustang and make sure no fuel-related warning message appears.
- ⛽ If a “Check Fuel Fill Inlet” message was present, drive normally for a short trip. It may clear after the system runs its self-check.
- 🔍 If the message remains, inspect the capless filler flap for dirt or damage.
- 🛠️ No scan tool reset is normally required for replacing a dust cap or filler plug.
