• Park your F-150 on level ground.
• Shift to Park and set the parking brake.
• Turn the engine off.
• Clean around the fuel door area before opening it. This keeps dirt from falling near the filler neck.
• A capless fuel filler is a fuel opening with spring-loaded doors instead of a screw-on gas cap.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Fuel Door

• Use your hand to press and release the rear edge of the fuel door.
• Let the fuel door swing fully open.
• Use a clean microfiber towel to wipe dust from the inside of the fuel door and around the filler neck.
• Keep dirt away from the filler.

Step 2: Inspect the Capless Fuel Filler

• Use safety glasses and look at the round filler opening.
• Check that the metal spring-loaded flaps are closed and not stuck open.
• Use a clean microfiber towel to gently wipe only the outer plastic area.
• Do not push the towel into the filler neck.

Step 3: Remove the Old Dust Cap if Installed

• Use your hand to pull the old capless fuel filler dust cap straight off.
• If it has a tether, use your hand to unhook the tether from the fuel door or filler housing.
• Do not use pliers or screwdrivers, because they can scratch the filler housing.

Step 4: Install the New Dust Cap

• Use your hand to align the new capless fuel filler dust cap with the filler opening.
• Press it straight on until it sits flat and secure.
• If the dust cap has a tether, use your hand to attach the tether to the fuel door hook or filler housing point.
• No torque spec applies because this part is hand-installed only.

Step 5: Close the Fuel Door

• Use your hand to close the fuel door.
• Press gently until it latches flush with the bedside panel.
• Make sure the fuel door does not rub or pop back open.

• Start your F-150 and confirm there is no fuel smell around the fuel door.
• If a check engine light was already on for an EVAP leak, drive normally for a few trips; the system may need time to retest itself.
• If the check engine light stays on, the capless filler seal, EVAP purge valve, or other EVAP component may need diagnosis.
• If the filler flaps are dirty or stuck, use Ford’s emergency fuel funnel to gently open and close the flaps several times, then recheck. The emergency funnel is usually stored with the jack tools.
