🔧 Sonata - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

On your Sonata, the “front turn signal” can mean the bulb inside the headlamp housing or the turn signal in the side mirror. The steps (and even whether it’s replaceable) depend on which one you’re working on.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the car OFF and keep the key fob 15+ feet away.
  • ⚠️ Let the headlamp area cool if lights were recently on.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch any orange high-voltage cables or connectors.
  • ⚠️ If raising the front, support with jack stands before reaching underneath.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • Small flashlight
  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front turn signal bulb - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and apply the parking brake.
  • Turn the car OFF and keep the key fob away from the car.
  • Open the hood and use a flashlight to locate the rear of the headlamp assembly.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which “front turn signal” you’re replacing

  • Look at what’s flashing: the lamp inside the headlight area, or the lamp on the mirror.
  • If it’s a thin light strip (often LED), it may not use a replaceable bulb.

Step 2: Choose your access path

  • Try engine-bay access first: use a small flashlight to find a twist-lock bulb socket on the back of the headlamp.
  • If your hand won’t fit, use wheel-well access: use wheel chocks, then lift with a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) and support with jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum).

Step 3: Wheel-well liner access (only if needed)

  • Turn the front wheel away from the side you’re working on for more space.
  • Remove the liner fasteners near the headlamp area using a trim clip removal tool and Phillips screwdriver.
  • If there are small bolts, remove with a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
  • Pull the liner back just enough to reach the back of the headlamp.

Step 4: Remove the turn signal bulb socket (headlamp type)

  • Wear nitrile gloves and use safety glasses.
  • Locate the turn signal socket on the rear of the headlamp.
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it straight out.
  • If stuck, wiggle gently—don’t pry hard.

Step 5: Replace the bulb

  • Remove the bulb from the socket (most pull straight out; some twist—match what you see).
  • Install the new front turn signal bulb firmly into the socket.
  • Do not touch the glass with bare fingers (skin oils can shorten bulb life).

Step 6: Reinstall and test

  • Reinsert the socket into the headlamp and twist clockwise until it locks.
  • Reinstall the wheel-well liner fasteners using the trim clip removal tool, Phillips screwdriver, and 10mm socket as needed.
  • Turn the car ON and test the left and right turn signals.
  • If the blink rate is very fast, the bulb may be the wrong type or not seated.

âś… After Repair

  • Verify both front and rear turn signals flash at a normal speed.
  • Confirm the socket seal is seated to keep moisture out.
  • If a warning message remains, recheck the bulb seating and connector fit.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80-$180 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $10-$30 (parts only)

You Save: $50-$170 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
