🔧 Kicks - Front Door Lock Actuator Replacement

This repair replaces the failed front door lock actuator inside the front door latch assembly. On your Kicks, the actuator is integrated with the door latch, so the door trim panel, moisture barrier, lock rods/cables, and latch assembly must be removed carefully.

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging door electrical connectors to reduce the chance of short circuits.
  • ⚠️ The front door has sharp metal edges inside. Wear gloves and move slowly.
  • ⚠️ Do not tear the clear plastic moisture barrier. It prevents water from entering the cabin.
  • ⚠️ Support the door trim panel while unplugging connectors so wiring is not pulled or damaged.
  • ⚠️ If replacing the driver door latch, keep the key cylinder linkage aligned so the mechanical key still works.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Kicks on level ground, shift to Park, and apply the parking brake.
  • Lower the front window fully before disconnecting the battery. This gives better access and prevents glass damage.
  • Make sure the door you are repairing is unlocked before starting.
  • Open the hood and use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least 3 minutes before unplugging door connectors.
  • Place painter's tape along the painted edge of the door near the latch to prevent scratches.
  • A trim removal tool is a plastic pry tool used to pop panels loose without damaging them.
  • Butyl sealing tape is sticky black sealing material used to reseal the moisture barrier.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the Inner Door Handle Trim

  • Use a plastic panel removal tool to gently pry off the small trim cover behind the inside door handle.
  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the screw behind the handle trim.
  • Place the screw in a magnetic parts tray so it does not get lost.
  • Go slow to avoid cracked trim.

Step 2: Remove the Pull Handle Screw Cover

  • Use a small flathead screwdriver wrapped with painter's tape to lift the screw cover in the door pull handle area.
  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the pull handle screw.
  • If equipped with a small lower screw near the door pocket, remove it with a Phillips #2 screwdriver.

Step 3: Release the Door Trim Panel Clips

  • Start at the lower rear corner of the door panel.
  • Use a flat trim removal tool to pry between the door panel and the metal door shell.
  • Pop the clips loose one at a time around the bottom and sides of the panel.
  • Lift the door panel upward to unhook it from the window ledge.
  • Do not pull the panel away quickly because electrical connectors and cables are still attached.

Step 4: Disconnect Door Panel Wiring and Cables

  • Support the door panel with one hand.
  • Use a small flathead screwdriver to press the locking tab on the power window switch connector, then unplug it.
  • If equipped, unplug the mirror switch or lock switch connector using the same small flathead screwdriver method.
  • Use needle-nose pliers to rotate the inside handle cable retainer out of its bracket.
  • Lift the cable end out of the handle lever by hand.
  • Set the door panel on a soft surface.

Step 5: Remove the Moisture Barrier

  • Use a plastic panel removal tool to slowly separate the clear plastic moisture barrier from the black butyl adhesive.
  • Peel it back only as far as needed to access the latch area at the rear of the door.
  • If the butyl stretches, use a pick tool to guide it away from the plastic without tearing it.
  • Keep the barrier clean and reusable.

Step 6: Disconnect the Door Latch Electrical Connector

  • Shine a work light into the rear of the door.
  • Find the electrical connector on the door latch/actuator assembly.
  • Use a small flathead screwdriver to press the connector lock tab.
  • Pull the connector straight off by hand. Do not pull on the wires.

Step 7: Disconnect the Lock Rods and Cables

  • Use a work light to identify the latch rods/cables attached to the latch assembly.
  • Use a small flathead screwdriver or pick tool to open the plastic retaining clips.
  • Use needle-nose pliers to lift the rod ends or cable ends out of the latch levers.
  • Take a quick photo before removing them if you need a reference for reassembly.
  • On the driver door, carefully disconnect the key cylinder linkage and keep its clip position noted.

Step 8: Remove the Exterior Handle Linkage if Needed

  • Use a small flathead screwdriver to release the exterior handle linkage clip at the latch.
  • Use needle-nose pliers to slide the linkage free from the latch lever.
  • Do not bend the linkage rod because this can affect handle operation.

Step 9: Remove the Door Latch Mounting Screws

  • Look at the rear edge of the door where the latch grabs the striker.
  • Use a Torx T30 bit socket with a ratchet handle to remove the three latch mounting screws.
  • Hold the latch through the access opening with your other hand so it does not drop inside the door.
  • If screws are tight, press the Torx bit firmly into the screw to prevent stripping.

Step 10: Remove the Latch/Actuator Assembly

  • Guide the latch/actuator assembly out through the door access opening by hand.
  • Use a work light to make sure no wiring, rods, or cables are still attached.
  • Compare the old latch/actuator assembly with the new one before installing it.
  • Make sure the connector shape, lever positions, and mounting points match.

Step 11: Install the New Latch/Actuator Assembly

  • Place the new front door lock actuator/latch assembly into the door by hand.
  • Align it with the three screw holes on the rear edge of the door.
  • Start the three Torx T30 screws by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a Torx T30 bit socket and torque wrench to tighten the latch screws to Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).

Step 12: Reconnect Linkages, Rods, and Cables

  • Use needle-nose pliers to reconnect the exterior handle linkage to the latch lever.
  • Snap the plastic retaining clip closed by hand.
  • Reconnect the lock rods or cables to the same levers they came from.
  • Use a small flathead screwdriver to make sure each plastic retainer is fully locked.
  • On the driver door, reconnect the key cylinder linkage in its original position.

Step 13: Reconnect the Electrical Connector

  • Push the latch electrical connector onto the new actuator by hand until it clicks.
  • Gently tug the connector body to confirm it is locked.
  • Do not tug on the wires.

Step 14: Test the Latch Before Reassembling

  • Use a 10mm socket to temporarily reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Use the key fob or door switch to lock and unlock the door.
  • Use the inside and outside handles to confirm the door opens correctly.
  • Use a screwdriver shaft to simulate the door striker by clicking the latch closed, then pull the handle to release it.
  • After testing, use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable again before final assembly.
  • Testing now saves rework later.

Step 15: Reseal the Moisture Barrier

  • Press the moisture barrier back into the original butyl adhesive by hand.
  • If the adhesive is dirty or stretched, apply butyl sealing tape around the opening.
  • Use your fingers to press the plastic firmly into the butyl all the way around.
  • Make sure there are no gaps at the bottom, because water drains through the inside of the door.

Step 16: Reconnect the Door Panel

  • Reconnect the inside handle cable by hand and snap the cable retainer back into its bracket.
  • Reconnect the power window switch connector by hand until it clicks.
  • Reconnect any mirror or lock switch connectors by hand until they click.
  • Align the top of the door panel with the window ledge.

Step 17: Reinstall the Door Trim Panel

  • Hook the top edge of the panel over the window ledge by hand.
  • Line up the plastic clips with the holes in the metal door shell.
  • Press around the panel edges by hand until each clip snaps in.
  • Replace any broken door trim panel clips before snapping the panel fully into place.

Step 18: Reinstall Screws and Trim Covers

  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to reinstall the screw behind the inside door handle.
  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to reinstall the pull handle screw.
  • If removed, reinstall the lower door pocket screw with a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
  • Use your hand to snap the screw covers and handle trim back into place.
  • Use a torque wrench if possible and tighten small trim screws only snug, about Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs).

Step 19: Reconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Tighten the battery terminal nut to Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
  • Make sure the terminal does not rotate by hand after tightening.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Lock and unlock the door several times using the key fob, interior switch, and manual lock knob.
  • ✅ Open the door from the inside and outside several times to confirm smooth operation.
  • ✅ For the driver door, test the mechanical key in the outside key cylinder if equipped.
  • ✅ Confirm the power window and mirror switch work after reconnecting the battery.
  • ✅ If the window auto-up feature does not work, initialize it by fully closing the window and holding the switch up for about 3 seconds.
  • ✅ Check that the door closes flush and does not bounce back from the striker.
  • ✅ After the next rain or wash, check the lower door panel and carpet area for water leaks.
