🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the Small Trim Covers
- Use a small flathead screwdriver wrapped with painter’s tape to gently pry off the small screw covers in the door pull and handle area.
- Use light pressure so you do not mark the plastic trim.
- Set the covers aside in the order removed.
- Work slowly around plastic trim.
Step 2: Remove the Door Panel Screws
- Use a 7mm socket and ratchet wrench to remove the lower door panel screws.
- Use an 8mm socket and ratchet wrench to remove the larger door pull/armrest screws.
- Use a Torx T20 screwdriver if your switch trim or handle trim uses Torx screws.
- Keep all screws grouped by location.
Step 3: Release the Door Panel Clips
- Slide the trim panel removal tool between the door panel and metal door shell at the lower edge.
- Pop the clips loose one at a time around the sides and bottom of the panel.
- Lift the door panel straight upward to unhook it from the window ledge.
- Do not pull the panel away hard because wiring is still attached.
Step 4: Disconnect Door Panel Wiring and Cables
- Support the panel with one hand.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or pick tool set to release the lock tabs on the window switch and lock switch connectors.
- Use needle-nose pliers or a pick tool set to release the interior handle cable from its plastic retainer.
- Set the door panel on a clean soft surface.
Step 5: Peel Back the Water Shield
- Use your hands and a small flathead screwdriver only if needed to gently peel back the plastic vapor barrier near the latch area.
- The vapor barrier is the plastic sheet that keeps water away from the interior door panel.
- Do not tear it. If the butyl seal stretches or separates, plan to reseal it with butyl sealing tape.
Step 6: Disconnect the Lock Actuator Electrical Connector
- Reach inside the rear edge of the door and locate the latch/actuator assembly.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or pick tool set to press the connector lock tab.
- Pull the connector straight off the actuator.
- Inspect the connector for corrosion or loose terminals.
Step 7: Release the Lock Rods and Cables
- Use needle-nose pliers and a pick tool set to open the plastic retainers on the latch rods.
- Rotate each plastic clip away from the rod, then lift the rod out of the clip.
- Take a quick photo before removing rods so you can reinstall them correctly.
- Photos prevent mix-ups.
Step 8: Remove the Exterior Door Handle Access Fastener if Needed
- Some front door latch removals require loosening the exterior handle access fastener from the door edge.
- Use a Torx T20 screwdriver or 8mm socket, depending on the fastener installed.
- Do not fully remove the handle fastener unless required. Loosen only enough to release the handle linkage if needed.
Step 9: Remove the Latch/Actuator Assembly
- At the rear edge of the door, use a Torx T27 screwdriver to remove the three latch mounting screws.
- Support the latch inside the door with your other hand so it does not drop.
- Guide the latch/actuator assembly out through the large access opening in the door.
- If it catches, stop and check for a still-connected rod, cable, or wiring connector.
Step 10: Install the New Actuator/Latch Assembly
- Compare the new front door lock actuator/latch assembly to the old one before installing.
- Move any reusable clips or cable brackets from the old assembly to the new one using a small flathead screwdriver or pick tool set.
- Position the new latch/actuator inside the door.
- Start all three latch screws by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a Torx T27 screwdriver to snug the screws.
- Use a torque wrench rated 20-100 in-lbs with the correct Torx bit to tighten the latch screws to Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
Step 11: Reconnect Rods, Cables, and Electrical Connector
- Use needle-nose pliers to seat each rod into its original plastic retainer.
- Snap each retainer closed fully by hand.
- Reconnect the interior handle cable into its bracket and lever.
- Push the electrical connector onto the actuator until it clicks.
- Use your photo from Step 7 to confirm every rod and cable is in the correct position.
Step 12: Test Before Reinstalling the Panel
- Keep your fingers clear of the latch opening.
- Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable temporarily.
- Torque battery terminal nut to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
- Use the key fob and interior lock switch to test lock and unlock operation.
- Use a screwdriver handle, not your finger, to rotate the latch closed for testing if needed.
- Pull the interior and exterior handles to confirm the latch releases properly.
- Use the 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable again before final reassembly.
Step 13: Reseal the Water Shield
- Press the vapor barrier back into place by hand.
- If the original seal is damaged, apply butyl sealing tape around the loose areas.
- Make sure the barrier is sealed at the bottom so water does not leak into the cab.
Step 14: Reinstall the Door Panel
- Reconnect the window switch, lock switch, and handle cable connectors by hand until each one clicks.
- Hang the top of the door panel over the window ledge.
- Align the plastic clips with their holes.
- Press around the panel edges by hand to snap the clips into place.
- Replace any broken door trim panel clips before final installation.
Step 15: Reinstall Screws and Trim Covers
- Use a 7mm socket and ratchet wrench to reinstall the lower door panel screws.
- Use an 8mm socket and ratchet wrench to reinstall the armrest/door pull screws.
- Use a Torx T20 screwdriver to reinstall any Torx trim screws.
- Use a torque wrench rated 20-100 in-lbs to tighten small trim screws snugly to Torque to 2-3 Nm (18-27 in-lbs).
- Snap the trim covers back into place by hand.
Step 16: Reconnect Battery and Final Test
- Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable.
- Torque battery terminal nut to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
- Test lock and unlock using the key fob, interior switch, manual lock button, inside handle, and outside handle.
- Close the door gently the first time to confirm the latch lines up correctly.
