📋 Before You Begin

  • 🔼 Raise the front window fully before starting.
  • 🔑 Remove the key from the ignition and keep the key fob away from the vehicle.
  • 🔋 Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable, then wait at least 90 seconds before unplugging door connectors.
  • 🧰 A trim removal tool is a plastic pry tool that helps remove interior panels without scratching them.
  • 🧲 Place screws in a magnetic parts tray so nothing gets lost inside the door.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Protect the Door Trim

  • Use 1-inch painter’s tape around the inner door handle bezel, switch panel, and trim edges.
  • Put on safety glasses and work gloves before prying panels.
  • Tape prevents scuffs on soft trim.

Step 2: Remove the Small Trim Covers

  • Use a small flat-blade screwdriver to gently lift the screw cover behind the inside door handle.
  • Use the small flat-blade screwdriver to lift the screw cover inside the door pull pocket.
  • Set both covers in the magnetic parts tray.

Step 3: Remove the Door Panel Screws

  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the screw behind the inside door handle.
  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the screw in the door pull pocket.
  • Some front door panels may also use a 10mm bolt at the pull handle; if present, remove it with a 10mm socket and ratchet wrench.

Step 4: Remove the Power Window Switch Panel

  • Use a plastic panel clip removal tool to pry up the rear edge of the switch panel.
  • Lift the switch panel just enough to reach the connector underneath.
  • Use a small flat-blade screwdriver to press the connector lock tab, then unplug the switch connector.
  • Set the switch panel aside on a clean towel.

Step 5: Release the Door Trim Panel Clips

  • Use a flat trim removal tool at the lower rear corner of the door panel.
  • Pull outward firmly to release the first clip.
  • Continue around the bottom and front edge using the flat trim removal tool.
  • A clip is a plastic fastener that snaps the panel to the metal door shell.
  • Pull near clips, not from the middle.

Step 6: Lift Off the Door Trim Panel

  • Use both hands to lift the door trim panel straight upward off the window ledge.
  • Do not yank the panel away; cables and connectors are still attached.
  • Use a small flat-blade screwdriver to disconnect any courtesy light or lock switch connectors.

Step 7: Disconnect the Inside Handle Cables

  • Use needle-nose pliers to rotate the cable end retainers out of the inside door handle bracket.
  • Lift the cable balls out of the handle levers by hand.
  • Mark the cable positions with painter’s tape if needed so they go back in the same locations.

Step 8: Peel Back the Water Shield

  • Use your fingers and a flat trim removal tool to slowly peel the plastic water shield away from the rear half of the door.
  • Do not tear it; this shield keeps rainwater away from the door trim and wiring.
  • If the black butyl sealant stretches, press it back onto the door or replace it with new butyl sealant strip.

Step 9: Disconnect the Lock Actuator Electrical Connector

  • Look inside the rear edge of the door for the latch/actuator assembly.
  • Use a small flat-blade screwdriver to press the connector lock tab.
  • Pull the connector straight off by the connector body, not by the wires.

Step 10: Disconnect the Lock Rods and Cables

  • Use needle-nose pliers to rotate the plastic retaining clips off the lock rods.
  • Lift each rod out of its clip by hand.
  • If your actuator uses Bowden cables, use needle-nose pliers to unclip the cable housings and lift the cable ends out of the latch levers.
  • A Bowden cable is a flexible cable that pulls a latch lever when you move the handle.

Step 11: Remove the Front Door Lock Actuator/Latch Assembly

  • Open the door fully and look at the rear edge of the door where the latch grabs the striker.
  • Use a Torx T30 screwdriver to remove the three latch mounting screws.
  • Support the latch with one hand inside the door while removing the last screw.
  • Guide the actuator/latch assembly out through the door access opening.

Step 12: Transfer Any Brackets or Rods

  • Compare the old actuator/latch assembly to the new one before installing it.
  • Use needle-nose pliers to transfer any rods, clips, rubber seals, or brackets that are not included on the new part.
  • Make sure all plastic clips snap fully closed.

Step 13: Install the New Actuator/Latch Assembly

  • Guide the new actuator/latch assembly into the door through the access opening.
  • Align the latch with the three holes on the rear edge of the door.
  • Start all three screws by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a Torx T30 screwdriver to snug the screws evenly.
  • Use an inch-pound torque wrench with a Torx T30 bit to tighten the latch screws to Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).

Step 14: Reconnect Rods, Cables, and Connector

  • Use needle-nose pliers to place each lock rod back into its correct lever.
  • Snap each plastic rod retainer fully closed by hand.
  • Reconnect any Bowden cables by seating the cable end first, then clipping the cable housing into its bracket.
  • Push the electrical connector onto the actuator until it clicks.

Step 15: Test Before Reassembly

  • Use a 10mm socket to temporarily reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Close the door only to the first latch click, or use a screwdriver shaft to simulate the door striker in the latch.
  • Use the key fob and the interior lock switch to test lock and unlock operation.
  • Use the inside and outside handles to confirm the latch releases correctly.
  • Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable again before finishing reassembly.
  • Test now, before the panel goes on.

Step 16: Reinstall the Water Shield

  • Press the plastic water shield back onto the door by hand.
  • Use fresh butyl sealant strip anywhere the original seal no longer sticks.
  • Make sure wiring passes through the correct openings and is not pinched.

Step 17: Reconnect the Inside Handle Cables

  • Use needle-nose pliers to install the cable balls into the inside handle levers.
  • Rotate the cable housings into their bracket until they lock in place.
  • Pull the inside handle once by hand to confirm smooth movement.

Step 18: Reinstall the Door Trim Panel

  • Reconnect any door courtesy light or lock switch connectors by hand.
  • Hang the upper edge of the door trim panel over the window ledge.
  • Align the plastic clips with their holes.
  • Press around the edges by hand until each clip snaps into place.

Step 19: Reinstall Screws and Switch Panel

  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to reinstall the screw behind the inside door handle.
  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to reinstall the screw in the door pull pocket.
  • If a 10mm pull-handle bolt was removed, reinstall it with a 10mm socket and tighten snugly.
  • Reconnect the power window switch connector by hand.
  • Press the switch panel down until it clicks into place.
  • Snap the screw covers back into place by hand.

Step 20: Reconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Make sure the terminal is fully seated and snug.
  • Do not overtighten the battery terminal clamp.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Test the door lock with the key fob, driver switch, passenger switch, and manual lock knob.
  • ✅ Test the inside and outside door handles several times.
  • ✅ Confirm the door opens, closes, locks, and unlocks smoothly.
  • ✅ Reinitialize the auto window function if needed: turn ignition ON, lower the window fully, then raise it fully and hold the switch up for about 2 seconds.
  • ✅ Make sure no warning lights appear after reconnecting the battery.
