📋 Before You Begin
- Park your RAV4 on level ground and turn the vehicle OFF.
- Lower or raise the window as needed to verify operation, then leave it fully raised before disassembly.
- Open the front door you are repairing and keep the key fob away from the vehicle.
- Disconnect the negative 12V battery terminal with a 10mm socket. This prevents accidental lock operation while your hands are inside the door.
- A trim clip removal tool is a plastic or metal fork-shaped tool used to pop door clips loose without cracking the panel.
- Take phone photos before unplugging parts.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the Interior Door Handle Trim
- Use a plastic pry tool set to gently lift the small trim cover behind the interior door handle.
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the screw hidden behind the cover.
- Place the screw in a magnetic parts tray.
- Plastic trim cracks easily.
Step 2: Remove the Armrest/Switch Panel
- Use a plastic pry tool set to carefully pry up the power window switch panel from the armrest.
- Lift the panel just enough to access the connector.
- Use a pick tool to press the connector lock tab, then unplug the switch connector by hand.
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver or 10mm socket to remove any exposed door pull fastener, depending on the fastener installed.
Step 3: Remove the Door Trim Panel
- Use a trim clip removal tool at the lower edge of the door panel to pop the first retaining clip loose.
- Continue around the sides and bottom of the panel with the trim clip removal tool until all clips release.
- Lift the door panel straight upward to unhook it from the window ledge.
- Support the panel with one hand and disconnect any remaining electrical connectors by pressing their tabs with a pick tool.
- Use needle-nose pliers to release the interior handle cable ends from the handle lever if equipped.
Step 4: Remove the Moisture Barrier or Access Cover
- Use a plastic pry tool set to gently peel back the door moisture barrier or access cover near the latch area.
- If the black butyl sealer stretches, use painter’s tape to hold the barrier up and away from your work area.
- Do not tear the barrier. It keeps rainwater away from the cabin side of the door.
- If the butyl sealer no longer sticks, replace it with butyl sealing tape during reassembly.
Step 5: Disconnect the Lock and Handle Rods/Cables
- Use a flashlight to look inside the rear edge of the door at the latch assembly.
- Use a pick tool to open the plastic retaining clips on the lock rod or handle cable ends.
- Use needle-nose pliers to slide the rod or cable end out of its lever.
- Mark cable or rod positions with painter’s tape if more than one connector looks similar.
- Do not bend latch rods.
Step 6: Disconnect the Actuator Electrical Connector
- Use the flashlight to locate the electrical connector on the door lock/latch actuator assembly.
- Press the connector tab by hand or with a pick tool.
- Pull the connector straight off. Do not pull on the wires.
Step 7: Remove the Door Lock/Latch Assembly
- Use painter’s tape around the rear door edge near the latch screws to protect the paint.
- Use a Torx T30 socket and ratchet wrench to remove the three latch screws from the rear edge of the door.
- Support the latch with your other hand through the door access opening as the last screw comes out.
- Carefully guide the door lock/latch actuator assembly out through the access opening.
Step 8: Transfer Any Brackets or Rod Clips
- Compare the old and new front door lock/latch actuator assembly side by side.
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver, pick tool, or needle-nose pliers to transfer any brackets, clips, or cable retainers from the old unit to the new unit.
- Make sure every lever and cable mount matches the old assembly before installation.
Step 9: Install the New Door Lock/Latch Actuator Assembly
- Guide the new latch assembly into the door by hand through the access opening.
- Align it with the rear edge mounting holes.
- Install the three latch screws by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a Torx T30 socket and torque wrench rated 5-40 Nm to tighten the latch screws. Torque to 5.0 Nm (44 in-lbs).
Step 10: Reconnect Rods, Cables, and Electrical Connector
- Use needle-nose pliers to place each rod or cable end back into its latch lever.
- Use a pick tool to snap each plastic retainer closed.
- Push the electrical connector onto the actuator until it clicks.
- Gently pull each cable or rod by hand to confirm it is locked in place.
Step 11: Test Before Reinstalling the Door Panel
- Reconnect the negative 12V battery terminal with a 10mm socket. Torque to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
- Temporarily plug in the power window/lock switch connector by hand.
- Use the door lock switch and key fob to lock and unlock the door several times.
- Use a screwdriver handle to gently rotate the latch to the closed position, then pull the inside and outside handles to verify release.
- Do not close the door until the latch releases correctly.
- If operation is wrong, disconnect the 12V battery again with a 10mm socket and recheck cable/rod routing.
Step 12: Reinstall the Moisture Barrier
- Use your fingers to press the moisture barrier back into the original butyl sealer.
- If the sealer no longer sticks, apply butyl sealing tape around the opening and press the barrier into it.
- Use a plastic pry tool set to smooth the barrier edges without tearing it.
Step 13: Reinstall the Door Trim Panel
- Reconnect the interior handle cables by hand, then snap their retainers into place with needle-nose pliers if needed.
- Reconnect all electrical connectors by hand until they click.
- Hang the top of the door panel over the window ledge.
- Align the door panel clips with their holes and press around the edges by hand until each clip snaps in.
- Replace broken door trim panel clips before final installation.
Step 14: Reinstall Screws and Switch Panel
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver or 10mm socket to reinstall the door pull fastener.
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to reinstall the screw behind the interior door handle trim.
- Snap the handle trim cover back into place by hand.
- Plug in the window switch connector by hand and press the switch panel down until it snaps flush.

- ✅ Test lock and unlock operation from the key fob, driver door switch, and interior lock knob.
- ✅ Test both the inside and outside door handles before driving.
- ✅ Close the door gently the first time and confirm it latches and opens normally.
- ✅ Reset auto window operation if needed by holding the window switch fully up for several seconds after the window closes.
- ✅ Check that the door ajar warning turns off when the door is closed.
