The front door lock actuator is the small electric motor and latch assembly that locks and unlocks your Expedition’s front door. Replacing it requires removing the inner door panel, disconnecting the latch cables and electrical connector, then swapping the actuator/latch assembly.

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before working inside the door to prevent accidental airbag, window, or lock operation.

  • ⚠️ The front door has sharp metal edges inside. Wear gloves and move slowly.
  • ⚠️ Do not slam the door until the latch operation is tested with a screwdriver. A misconnected latch cable can trap the door closed.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Expedition on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Lower the front window fully before disconnecting the battery. This gives you better hand access inside the door.
  • Open the door you are repairing and leave it open for the whole job.
  • Use the 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least 2 minutes before unplugging door wiring.
  • Put painter’s tape along painted door edges near the latch area to help prevent scratches.
  • A trim removal tool is a plastic pry tool that helps pop panels loose without scratching the interior.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the front door switch panel

  • Use the trim removal tool set to gently pry up the window/lock switch panel from the armrest.
  • Lift the panel slowly. Use the small flat-blade screwdriver to press the connector locking tabs.
  • Unplug the electrical connectors and set the switch panel aside.
  • Tip: Take a phone photo first.

Step 2: Remove hidden door panel fasteners

  • Use the small flat-blade screwdriver or pick tool set to remove the small trim covers in the pull handle and lower panel areas.
  • Use the 7mm socket and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to remove the door panel screws.
  • Use the 8mm socket if your panel has larger handle bolts in the pull area.
  • Place all screws in the magnetic parts tray so nothing gets lost.

Step 3: Release the door panel clips

  • Start at the lower rear corner of the panel.
  • Use the trim removal tool set to pry between the panel and door shell until the first clip pops loose.
  • Work around the bottom and sides until all clips release.
  • Lift the panel straight upward to unhook it from the window ledge.
  • Do not pull the panel far away yet. Wiring and cables are still attached.

Step 4: Disconnect the inner handle cable and wiring

  • Support the panel with one hand.
  • Use the small flat-blade screwdriver to release any remaining electrical connector locks.
  • Use the needle-nose pliers to rotate the inner door handle cable retainer out of its bracket.
  • Lift the cable end out of the handle lever.
  • Set the door panel on a soft surface.

Step 5: Peel back the water shield

  • The water shield is the plastic moisture barrier stuck to the inside of the door.
  • Use the trim removal tool set and your fingers to slowly peel the water shield back from the rear half of the door.
  • If the black butyl adhesive stretches, keep it clean. It must reseal later.
  • Use painter’s tape 1-inch to hold the shield out of your way.

Step 6: Disconnect the lock actuator electrical connector

  • Use the work light to look inside the rear of the door near the latch.
  • Find the electrical connector on the door lock actuator/latch assembly.
  • Use the small flat-blade screwdriver to press the connector tab, then unplug it by hand.
  • Do not pull on the wires. Pull only on the connector body.

Step 7: Disconnect the latch rods and cables

  • Use the needle-nose pliers or pick tool set to release the plastic rod clips on the lock/latch rods.
  • Rotate each plastic clip away from the rod, then lift the rod out.
  • If equipped with a cable-style outside handle release, use the small flat-blade screwdriver to release the cable housing from the bracket.
  • Mark cable and rod positions with painter’s tape 1-inch if needed.
  • Tip: Do one connector at a time.

Step 8: Remove the latch/actuator assembly bolts

  • Move to the rear edge of the open door where the latch grabs the striker.
  • Use the Torx T30 screwdriver to remove the three latch retaining screws.
  • Support the latch inside the door with your other hand so it does not fall.
  • Factory-style latch screw installation torque is typically Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).

Step 9: Remove the actuator/latch assembly from the door

  • Guide the actuator/latch assembly down and out through the large access opening in the door.
  • Use the work light to make sure no rods, cables, or wiring are still attached.
  • Compare the old and new actuator/latch assembly before installation.
  • Make sure the mounting holes, connector, latch claw, and cable brackets match.

Step 10: Install the new actuator/latch assembly

  • Place the new actuator/latch assembly into the door through the access opening.
  • Align it with the latch opening at the rear edge of the door.
  • Start the three latch screws by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the Torx T30 screwdriver to snug the screws evenly.
  • Use the torque wrench inch-pound with the correct Torx bit to tighten the screws to Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).

Step 11: Reconnect rods, cables, and wiring

  • Use the needle-nose pliers to reinstall each latch rod into its original hole.
  • Snap each plastic rod clip closed by hand until it locks around the rod.
  • Reconnect any release cable by seating the cable end first, then snapping the cable housing into the bracket.
  • Plug in the actuator electrical connector until it clicks.
  • Use the work light to inspect every connection.

Step 12: Test the latch before closing the door

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with the 10mm socket.
  • Use a small flat-blade screwdriver to push the latch claw closed while the door remains open.
  • Press the unlock switch and pull the inside handle to verify the latch releases.
  • Press lock and unlock on the door switch and key fob to verify actuator movement.
  • If the latch does not release correctly, stop and recheck the rods and cables before closing the door.

Step 13: Reseal the water shield

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable again with the 10mm socket before final reassembly.
  • Press the water shield back onto the door by hand.
  • Use butyl sealing tape anywhere the original adhesive no longer seals.
  • Make sure there are no gaps at the bottom edge. Water leaks can damage the door module and carpet.

Step 14: Reinstall the door panel

  • Reconnect the inner handle cable by hand and confirm it snaps into its bracket.
  • Reconnect all door panel electrical connectors by hand until they click.
  • Hang the door panel over the top window ledge.
  • Line up the retaining clips and press around the panel edges by hand until all clips seat.
  • Replace any broken clips with new door trim panel retaining clips.

Step 15: Reinstall screws, trim covers, and switch panel

  • Use the 7mm socket to reinstall the smaller door panel screws.
  • Use the 8mm socket to reinstall any larger pull-handle bolts if removed.
  • Tighten door trim screws snug only. Do not overtighten plastic trim.
  • Reconnect the switch panel connectors by hand.
  • Press the switch panel back into the armrest until it clips in place.

Step 16: Reconnect the battery and initialize basic functions

  • Use the 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Turn the ignition on without starting the engine.
  • Run the window fully up and hold the switch for 2 seconds, then fully down and hold for 2 seconds. This relearns the one-touch window function.
  • Check mirror, lock, window, memory, and speaker functions from the repaired door.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Lock and unlock the door using the inside switch, key fob, outside keypad if equipped, and interior handle.
  • ✅ Open the door from inside and outside several times before driving.
  • ✅ Close the door gently the first time and confirm it latches and releases normally.
  • ✅ Check that the door ajar warning turns off on the instrument cluster.
  • ✅ Confirm the window auto-up/auto-down feature works after battery reconnection.
  • ✅ Listen for rattles. If you hear one, a rod clip or trim clip may not be fully seated.
