📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Frontier on a flat, solid surface.
- Put the transmission in Park for automatic transmission or 1st gear for manual transmission.
- Set the parking brake firmly.
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires. Wheel chocks are blocks that stop the truck from rolling.
- Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir on the driver-side rear area of the engine bay.
- Check the brake fluid level. If it is at or above the MAX line, remove a small amount with a clean suction tool before compressing the caliper pistons.
- No infotainment menu, scan tool, EPB service mode, or battery disconnect is needed for the front brakes on your Frontier.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts
- Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen the front wheel lug nuts about 1/2 turn while the tires are still on the ground.
- Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
- Loosen first, lift second.
Step 2: Lift and Support the Front
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum under the front center crossmember to raise the front of your Frontier.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the proper front frame support points.
- Lower the truck gently onto the jack stands.
- Give the truck a small shake by hand to confirm it is stable before working near the wheels.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use the 21mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and place them flat under the frame area as an extra safety backup.
Step 4: Inspect the Brake Assembly
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Look at the brake caliper, rotor, brake hose, and pad thickness before disassembly.
- Use brake cleaner spray and shop towels to clean loose brake dust.
- A caliper is the clamp-shaped brake part that squeezes the pads against the rotor.
Step 5: Remove the Lower Caliper Slide Pin Bolt
- Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the lower caliper slide pin bolt.
- A slide pin lets the caliper move smoothly as the pads wear.
- If the pin spins, hold the slide pin area steady by hand while loosening the bolt.
Step 6: Swing the Caliper Up
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver gently between the caliper and pad to create a little movement if needed.
- Swing the caliper upward like a door hinge.
- Use a bungee cord to support the caliper from the suspension spring or upper control arm.
- Do not let the caliper hang by the rubber brake hose.
Step 7: Remove the Old Brake Pads and Hardware
- Pull the old inner and outer pads out of the caliper bracket by hand.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver carefully if the pads are stuck.
- Remove the old stainless pad clips from the bracket by hand or with the flat-blade screwdriver.
- Pad clips are thin metal guides that help the pads slide smoothly.
Step 8: Clean the Pad Contact Areas
- Use a wire brush to clean the caliper bracket areas where the pad clips sit.
- Use brake cleaner spray and shop towels to remove dust and rust flakes.
- Do not spray brake cleaner on painted body panels.
Step 9: Install the New Hardware
- Install the new front brake pad hardware kit clips into the caliper bracket by hand.
- Apply a very thin layer of brake lubricant to the pad clip sliding surfaces.
- Do not put lubricant on the rotor face or pad friction material.
- Grease metal contact points only.
Step 10: Compress the Caliper Piston
- Place one old brake pad against the caliper piston.
- Use the brake caliper piston compressor tool to slowly push the piston fully back into the caliper.
- Watch the brake fluid reservoir while compressing the piston so it does not overflow.
- The piston is the round part inside the caliper that pushes the brake pad.
Step 11: Install the New Brake Pads
- Slide the new inner and outer pads into the caliper bracket by hand.
- Make sure the friction material faces the rotor.
- If the pad set includes a wear indicator tab, place it in the same general position as the original pad.
- The pads should slide smoothly in the clips without being forced.
Step 12: Lower the Caliper and Install the Bolt
- Remove the bungee cord and swing the caliper down over the new pads.
- Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to install the lower caliper slide pin bolt by hand first.
- Use the 3/8-inch torque wrench and 14mm socket to tighten the caliper slide pin bolt to Torque to 32 Nm (24 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Repeat on the Other Front Side
- Repeat Steps 4 through 12 on the other front wheel.
- Use the same 14mm socket, flat-blade screwdriver, wire brush, brake cleaner spray, and brake caliper piston compressor tool.
- Always replace front brake pads in pairs.
Step 14: Reinstall the Front Wheels
- Place each wheel back on the hub by hand.
- Thread the lug nuts on by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 21mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 15: Lower the Truck and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to raise the truck slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- Lower your Frontier until the tires touch the ground enough to prevent spinning.
- Use the 1/2-inch torque wrench and 21mm socket to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 133 Nm (98 ft-lbs).
- Fully lower the truck and remove the floor jack.
Step 16: Pump the Brake Pedal
- Sit in the driver seat and press the brake pedal slowly several times until it feels firm.
- This moves the caliper pistons back out against the new pads.
- Do not drive until the pedal feels firm.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Check the brake fluid reservoir and adjust the level if needed.
- ✅ Start your Frontier and press the brake pedal again to confirm it feels firm.
- ✅ Test the brakes at very low speed in a safe area before normal driving.
- ✅ Listen for grinding, scraping, or clicking noises.
- ✅ Recheck lug nut torque after the first short drive using the 1/2-inch torque wrench and 21mm socket.
- ✅ Bed in the new pads with several gentle stops from about 30 mph, allowing time between stops for cooling.
- ✅ Avoid hard braking for the first 100-200 miles unless needed for safety.
