🔧 Passport - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your Passport’s engine air filter traps dust and debris before air enters the engine. Replacing it helps maintain performance and fuel economy, and it’s one of the easiest maintenance items to DIY.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool if it was recently running (hot parts nearby).
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers, clothing, and tools away from the radiator fan area.
  • ⚠️ Do not start the engine with the air filter removed.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Shut the engine off and remove the key (or keep the fob away from the vehicle).
  • Pop the hood and support it securely.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter housing

  • Use a flashlight to find the black plastic air box connected to the large intake tube (this is the engine’s “breathing” tube).

Step 2: Unclip the air box cover

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Release the metal retaining clips around the air box cover by hand.
  • Lift the air box cover up just enough to remove the filter. Don’t yank the intake tube.

Step 3: Remove the old filter

  • Pull the filter straight out.
  • Take a quick look in the lower air box for leaves or heavy dirt, and remove any loose debris by hand (don’t push dirt into the intake).

Step 4: Install the new filter

  • Insert the new filter the same way the old one came out.
  • Make sure it sits flat in the box and the sealing edge is fully seated all the way around. A pinched seal can cause dirty air leaks.

Step 5: Re-secure the air box

  • Lower the cover back into place.
  • Snap all the retaining clips back on by hand (you should feel them lock).
  • Do a final check that the cover is evenly closed on all sides.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 10–20 seconds.
  • Listen for any loud hissing/whistling (can indicate the air box isn’t fully clipped).
  • If you hear an intake leak, shut the engine off and re-check the filter seating and clips.
