🔧 Engine Air Filter - Replacement

The engine air filter traps dust and debris before they reach the engine. On your Explorer, replacing it helps maintain airflow, fuel economy, and throttle response. This is one of the easiest maintenance jobs and usually takes just a few minutes.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Make sure the engine is off before opening the air box.
  • Let hot engine parts cool if the vehicle was recently driven.
  • Keep dirt, leaves, and loose hardware out of the air box.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4-inch ratchet
  • Short extension
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key or keep the fob away from the vehicle.
  • Open the hood and locate the air filter housing.
  • Work clean to protect the engine.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the air filter housing

  • Use the 8mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to loosen any air box cover screws or clamps.
  • If the cover uses clips, release them by hand or use the flat-blade screwdriver gently if needed.
  • Lift the air box cover carefully and set it aside.

Step 2: Remove the old filter

  • Lift the old filter straight out of the housing.
  • Check the housing for leaves, dirt, or debris.
  • Do not let debris fall into the intake.

Step 3: Clean the air box

  • Use a clean cloth or your gloved hand to remove loose dirt from the housing.
  • Make sure the sealing surface is clean and dry.

Step 4: Install the new filter

  • Place the new engine air filter into the housing in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Make sure it sits flat and the seal is fully seated all the way around.

Step 5: Reinstall the air box cover

  • Set the cover back in place and make sure it lines up correctly.
  • Reinstall and tighten the screws or clamps with the 8mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet.
  • Confirm the air box is fully closed and latched.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and listen for any unusual air leaks.
  • Make sure the air box cover is secure.
  • If the old filter was very dirty, you may notice improved throttle response.
