🔧 Colorado - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your Colorado’s engine air filter keeps dust and debris out of the engine. Replacing it restores airflow and helps performance and fuel economy, especially if you drive on dusty roads.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Work on a cool engine to avoid burns.
  • 🛑 Keep tools and fingers away from the radiator fan area.
  • 🛑 Do not start the engine with the airbox open.
  • 🛑 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • Clean shop towel
  • Flathead screwdriver

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and put the shifter in Park.
  • Turn the engine off and let it cool for 15 minutes if it was running.
  • Open the hood and support it securely.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter box

  • Use a flashlight to find the large black plastic airbox near the front/side of the engine bay.
  • You’ll see metal clips around the airbox lid (these hold the top and bottom halves together).

Step 2: Release the airbox lid clips

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Unlatch the metal clips by hand. If a clip is stubborn, gently pry it with a flathead screwdriver.
  • Tip: Support the lid so it doesn’t snap back.

Step 3: Open the airbox and remove the old filter

  • Lift the airbox lid up enough to access the filter. You usually do not need to fully remove the lid.
  • Pull the old filter straight out.
  • Use a flashlight to check for leaves or dirt inside the lower airbox.

Step 4: Clean the airbox sealing surface

  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe out loose debris from the bottom of the airbox.
  • Wipe the rim where the filter seals (this helps prevent unfiltered air leaks).

Step 5: Install the new air filter

  • Drop the new engine air filter into the lower airbox the same way the old one came out.
  • Make sure it sits flat and fully in its groove all the way around.
  • Tip: If the lid won’t close, the filter isn’t seated.

Step 6: Close the airbox and latch the clips

  • Lower the airbox lid carefully and align it with the lower half.
  • Snap each clip back into place by hand.
  • Do a quick visual check that the lid is evenly closed on all sides.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 15-30 seconds.
  • Listen for whistling/hissing (that can mean the airbox lid isn’t fully clipped).
  • Take a short test drive and re-check the clips afterward.
