📋 Before You Begin

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Hood

• Use your hand to pull the hood release inside the cabin, then release the safety latch at the front of the hood.
• Use the hood prop rod if equipped, or confirm the hood struts hold the hood securely.
• Use safety glasses and nitrile gloves before reaching into the engine bay.

Step 2: Find the Air Cleaner Box

• Use a flashlight to look at the passenger side of the engine bay.
• The air cleaner box is the large black plastic box connected to the intake tube.
• Follow the big intake hose.

Step 3: Release the Air Cleaner Cover Clips

• Use your fingers to unclip the metal retaining clips around the air cleaner cover.
• Do not force the clips. They swing away from the cover when released.
• If a clip is tight, use a shop towel over your fingers for better grip.

Step 4: Lift the Air Cleaner Cover

• Use both hands to gently lift the air cleaner cover just enough to access the filter.
• Do not pull hard on the intake tube or wiring nearby.
• No bolts need to be removed for normal filter replacement on your Ranger.

Step 5: Remove the Old Engine Air Filter

• Use your hand to lift the old engine air filter straight out of the lower air cleaner box.
• Pay attention to how the filter sits in the box so the new one goes in the same way.
• Use a shop towel to keep loose dirt from falling into the clean side of the intake.

Step 6: Clean the Air Cleaner Box

• Use a vacuum with crevice nozzle to remove leaves, sand, and dust from the lower air cleaner box.
• Do not blow compressed air into the intake tube because it can push dirt toward sensors and the turbo inlet.
• Use a shop towel to wipe the sealing surface where the new filter gasket will sit.

Step 7: Install the New Engine Air Filter

• Use your hands to place the new engine air filter into the lower air cleaner box.
• Make sure the rubber edge sits flat all the way around.
• The filter should not be pinched, folded, or sitting crooked.
• Flat seal means clean air.

Step 8: Reinstall the Air Cleaner Cover

• Use both hands to lower the air cleaner cover evenly onto the new filter.
• Check that the cover sits flush on the air box with no gap.
• Use your fingers to snap all retaining clips fully back into place.

Step 9: Final Visual Check

• Use a flashlight to inspect around the air cleaner box.
• Confirm no tools, towels, packaging, or loose debris are left in the engine bay.
• Confirm the intake tube is still properly attached and not twisted.
