🔧 Focus - Engine Air Filter Replacement
Your Focus’s engine air filter sits inside the air filter box (air cleaner housing) in the engine bay. Replacing it helps the engine breathe properly, which can improve performance and fuel economy and prevent dirt from entering the engine.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25–0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns.
- ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the radiator fan area; it can turn on unexpectedly.
- ⚠️ Do not touch or pull on wiring at the air box/MAF sensor area (MAF = Mass Air Flow sensor that measures incoming air).
- Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flat-blade screwdriver
- Torx T25 screwdriver
- 7mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- Small flashlight
- Clean shop towel

- Engine air filter - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and switch the ignition off.
- Open the hood and let the engine cool for 10–15 minutes if it was running.
- Have a clean shop towel ready so no dirt falls into the air box.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the air filter box
- Use a small flashlight to find the black plastic air filter box in the engine bay with a large intake tube attached.
- Don’t confuse it with the cabin filter.
Step 2: Open the air filter box
- If your box uses metal clips: use a flat-blade screwdriver to help pop each clip open (if tight), then unclip by hand.
- If your box uses screws: use a Torx T25 screwdriver to loosen the cover screws (most stay captured in the lid).
- If there’s a hose clamp on the intake tube blocking the lid: loosen it with a 7mm socket and 1/4" ratchet just enough to move the tube slightly.
Step 3: Lift the lid and remove the old filter
- Lift the air box lid up carefully (don’t yank on any nearby wiring).
- Pull the old filter straight out by hand.
- Use a small flashlight to inspect the bottom of the air box for leaves/dirt.
Step 4: Clean the air box sealing surface
- Use a clean shop towel to wipe out loose debris in the air box.
- Wipe the rim where the filter seals so the new filter can seat tightly.
- Do not let dirt fall down the intake opening.
Step 5: Install the new engine air filter
- Place the new filter into the air box by hand.
- Make sure it sits flat and fully down in its tray (no corners folded).
- Confirm the rubber seal (if equipped) is evenly seated all the way around.
Step 6: Close and secure the air box
- Lower the lid into place and align all edges.
- Re-secure the housing:
- Metal clips: snap them closed by hand (use flat-blade screwdriver only if needed).
- Screws: tighten using a Torx T25 screwdriver until snug (do not over-tighten).
- If you loosened the intake clamp, tighten it with a 7mm socket and 1/4" ratchet until snug.
Step 7: Final check
- Run your fingers around the lid seam to confirm it’s evenly closed.
- Remove tools and the old filter from the engine bay.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30–60 seconds.
- Listen for air leaks (a loud hissing/whistling) that can happen if the lid or intake tube isn’t sealed.
- If you hear a leak, shut the engine off and re-check the air box clips/screws and intake clamp.
