🔧 Expedition - Engine Air Filter Replacement

The engine air filter cleans the air going into your engine. Replacing it helps maintain good performance and fuel economy, and it prevents dirt from damaging the turbochargers and engine.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool engine so you don’t burn your hands.
  • ⚠️ Keep loose clothing and fingers away from the cooling fan and belts.
  • ⚠️ Do not start the engine with the air filter removed.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Clean shop towel
  • Small vacuum (shop vac)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Expedition on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Turn the engine off and remove the key (or keep the key fob away from the vehicle).
  • Open the hood and make sure the engine area is cool to the touch.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter box

  • Use a flashlight to find the large black plastic air box connected to the intake tube (the big tube that feeds the engine).

Step 2: Open the air box

  • Release the air box retaining clips by hand (most are metal spring clips).
  • If the cover feels stuck, wiggle it gently by hand—don’t force it.
  • Tip: Take a quick photo before opening.

Step 3: Remove the old air filter

  • Lift the air box cover enough to slide the filter out.
  • Pull the filter straight out and note how it sits (which side faces up and how the seal fits).

Step 4: Clean the air box (lightly)

  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe out loose dust inside the lower air box.
  • Use a small vacuum (shop vac) to remove debris from the bottom of the box.
  • Do not let dirt fall into the intake opening.

Step 5: Install the new air filter

  • Place the new filter into the lower air box in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Make sure the rubber seal sits flat all the way around (no corners folded).
  • Tip: If it won’t sit flat, it’s misaligned.

Step 6: Close and latch the air box

  • Lower the air box cover back into place.
  • Re-engage all clips by hand and verify the cover is evenly seated on all sides.

✅ After Repair

  • Start your Expedition and let it idle for 15–30 seconds.
  • Listen for any hissing/whistling near the air box (a sign the cover isn’t sealed).
  • Recheck that all clips are fully latched and the cover is sitting evenly.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$140 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$45 (parts only)

You Save: $45-$95 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.5 hours.
