🔧 Q5 - Engine Air Filter Replacement
Your Q5’s engine air filter sits in the airbox and keeps dust/debris out of the turbo and engine. Replacing it restores proper airflow and helps prevent dirty air from wearing engine parts.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-30 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work with the engine off and cool to avoid burns.
- ⚠️ Keep tools and bolts out of the airbox intake tube.
- ⚠️ Do not start the engine with the filter removed.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Torx T25 driver
- 1/4" ratchet
- 1/4" extension (3" to 6")
- Trim clip remover
- Flashlight
- Shop vacuum with crevice tool
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine air filter - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and remove any loose items from the engine bay.
- Have a flashlight ready so you can confirm the filter is fully seated.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the airbox
- Use a flashlight to find the airbox (the large black plastic box feeding the intake tube near the front/side of the engine bay).
- Airbox = the filter housing.
Step 2: Remove any cover that blocks access (if equipped)
- If a plastic engine cover or small duct is in the way, gently release it using a trim clip remover.
- Place clips aside where they won’t fall into the engine bay.
Step 3: Open the airbox
- There are two common airbox styles on the Q5:
- If you see screws: use a Torx T25 driver with a 1/4" ratchet and 1/4" extension (3" to 6") to loosen/remove the airbox lid screws.
- If you see metal clips: use a trim clip remover to carefully pop the clips open.
- Torx is a star-shaped screw head.
Step 4: Lift the airbox lid and remove the old filter
- Lift the lid straight up just enough to pull the filter out. Use a flashlight so you don’t tug on nearby wiring or hoses.
- Pull the air filter straight out by hand (wear nitrile gloves if it’s dusty).
- Note the orientation of the filter (which side faces up) before removing it fully.
Step 5: Clean the airbox (lightly)
- Use a shop vacuum with crevice tool to vacuum out loose dirt from the lower airbox.
- Do not vacuum past the intake opening, and do not push dirt down the tube.
Step 6: Install the new air filter
- Place the new filter into the lower airbox by hand.
- Use a flashlight to confirm it sits flat all the way around (no corners folded or lifted).
- A pinched filter can cause unfiltered air leaks.
Step 7: Refit and secure the airbox lid
- Lower the lid carefully so it doesn’t disturb the filter.
- If your lid uses screws: tighten with a Torx T25 driver using a 1/4" ratchet until snug (do not over-tighten; the plastic strips easily).
- If your lid uses clips: press the lid down and close each clip by hand; use a trim clip remover only if you need gentle leverage.
Step 8: Reinstall any covers/ducts you removed
- Reinstall pieces using the trim clip remover to align clips, then press them in by hand.
- Do a quick visual check that nothing is left loose.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 20–30 seconds.
- Listen for whistling/hissing (can indicate the airbox lid isn’t seated).
- Take a short drive and confirm there’s no warning light and throttle feels normal.
