📋 Before You Begin

• Park your Civic on level ground.
• Set the parking brake and switch the ignition completely off.
• Open the hood and support it securely with the hood prop rod.
• Let the engine cool for a few minutes if it was recently driven.
• The air box is the black plastic box near the front/side of the engine bay that holds the engine air filter.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Hood

• Pull the hood release handle inside the cabin near the driver footwell.
• At the front of the hood, release the safety latch by hand and raise the hood.
• Secure the hood using the hood prop rod.
• Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.

Step 2: Locate the Air Box

• Find the black plastic air box in the engine bay.
• The large plastic intake tube connects the air box to the engine.
• No bolts need to be removed for the normal engine air filter replacement on your Civic.
• Take a photo before opening.

Step 3: Release the Air Box Clips

• Use your fingers to flip open the metal retaining clips around the air box cover.
• A retaining clip is a spring-style latch that holds the cover closed.
• Do not bend the clips with tools; they should release by hand.

Step 4: Lift the Air Box Cover

• Lift the air box cover upward by hand just enough to access the filter.
• Do not pull hard on the intake tube or attached wiring.
• If the cover feels stuck, check that every retaining clip is fully released.

Step 5: Remove the Old Air Filter

• Pull the old engine air filter straight out by hand.
• Notice which side faces up before removing it completely.
• Check the filter for heavy dirt, leaves, oil, or rodent debris.

Step 6: Clean the Air Box

• Use a shop vacuum with crevice nozzle to remove loose dirt, sand, leaves, or bugs from the lower air box.
• Use a clean microfiber towel to wipe the sealing surface where the filter sits.
• Do not push dirt into the intake tube opening.
• Keep debris out of the engine.

Step 7: Install the New Air Filter

• Place the new engine air filter into the lower air box by hand.
• Make sure the rubber edge sits flat all the way around.
• The filter must not be folded, pinched, or tilted.
• No torque spec applies because no bolts are removed for this service.

Step 8: Reinstall the Air Box Cover

• Lower the air box cover by hand onto the new filter.
• Make sure the cover sits evenly and does not crush the filter seal.
• Snap each retaining clip closed by hand until it locks securely.
• If a clip will not close, reopen the cover and reseat the filter.

Step 9: Final Check

• Use your hands to gently wiggle the air box cover and confirm it is secure.
• Check that the intake tube is still fully attached and not kinked.
• Remove all tools and the old filter from the engine bay.
• Close the hood firmly.
