📋 Before You Begin

• Park your HR-V on level ground.
• Turn the ignition off and remove the key or keep the smart key away from the vehicle.
• Let the engine cool if it was recently driven.
• Open the hood and support it securely with the hood prop rod.
• The engine air filter box is on the driver-side area of the engine bay, connected to the large black intake hose.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the Air Filter Box

• Use a flashlight to find the black plastic air filter box in the engine bay.
• The air filter box is the rectangular plastic housing attached to the large intake tube.
• Take a photo before opening.

Step 2: Release the Air Box Clips

• Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
• Release the metal retaining clips by hand. These clips hold the top cover of the air filter box closed.
• No bolts need to be removed for the normal engine air filter replacement on your HR-V.

Step 3: Lift the Air Box Cover

• Carefully lift the top of the air filter box by hand.
• Do not pull hard on the intake hose. It only needs to lift enough to slide the filter out.
• If the cover feels stuck, check that every retaining clip is fully released.

Step 4: Remove the Old Engine Air Filter

• Pull the old engine air filter straight out by hand.
• Look at how the filter is positioned before removing it completely.
• The rubber edge of the filter is the sealing surface. It must sit flat when installed.

Step 5: Clean the Air Box

• Use a shop towel to gently wipe loose dust or leaves from the lower air box.
• Do not push dirt into the intake tube.
• Do not use water inside the air box.

Step 6: Install the New Engine Air Filter

• Place the new engine air filter into the lower air box by hand.
• Make sure the filter sits flat all the way around.
• The rubber seal should not be pinched, folded, or sitting on top of the air box edge.
• A flat seal prevents dirty air leaks.

Step 7: Close the Air Box Cover

• Lower the air box cover by hand.
• Make sure the cover lines up evenly with the bottom half of the box.
• Reattach the metal retaining clips by hand until they snap fully into place.
• No torque spec applies because the factory cover is secured by clips, not bolts.

Step 8: Final Visual Check

• Use a flashlight to check that the air box cover is fully closed.
• Make sure no tools, towels, or packaging are left in the engine bay.
• Close the hood securely.

• Start your HR-V and let it idle for about 30 seconds.
• Listen for a loud whooshing or hissing sound, which may mean the air box is not fully closed.
• If the engine runs normally and no warning lights appear, the repair is complete.
• No scan tool reset or infotainment reset is required for this repair.
