⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Allow the engine to cool before working under the hood.
- Keep dirt, tools, and loose clothing away from the open air-intake housing.
- Do not start the engine while the filter or housing cover is removed.
- Battery disconnection is not required for this repair.

You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile mechanic’s gloves
- Safety glasses

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Sonata on level ground, shift into Park, apply the parking brake, and switch off the ignition.
- Open the hood and support it securely.
- Wait until the engine compartment is cool enough to touch comfortably.
- Remove the new filter from its packaging, but keep it clean and dry.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the Air-Cleaner Housing
- Use the LED flashlight to locate the large black plastic air-cleaner housing near the front corner of the engine compartment.
- Follow the wide intake hose from the engine to the housing if you are unsure.
Step 2: Release the Housing Clips
- Put on the nitrile mechanic’s gloves and release the metal retaining clips around the edge of the housing cover by hand.
- A retaining clip is a spring-loaded latch that holds the cover tightly against the lower housing.
- Support each clip while releasing it so it does not snap against the plastic.
Step 3: Lift and Disengage the Cover
- Use your gloved hands to lift the clipped edge of the cover slightly.
- Move the cover enough to disengage its locating tabs from the opposite side. Do not pull hard on the attached intake hose.
- Do not disconnect sensors or intake hoses.
Step 4: Remove the Old Filter
- Use your gloved hands to lift the old engine air filter straight out.
- Use the LED flashlight to inspect the lower housing for leaves, sand, or other debris.
- Keep debris from falling into the clean-air outlet leading toward the engine.
Step 5: Clean the Housing
- Use the microfiber cleaning cloth to wipe loose dust from the lower housing and its sealing edge.
- Do not push the cloth into the intake opening or use compressed air toward the engine.
Step 6: Install the New Filter
- Use your gloved hands to place the new filter into the lower housing in the same orientation as the old filter.
- Make sure the filter’s rubber sealing edge sits flat and evenly inside the housing.
- Do not force, bend, oil, or trim the filter.
Step 7: Close the Housing
- Use your gloved hands to engage the cover’s locating tabs first.
- Lower the opposite edge while checking that the filter seal remains inside the housing.
- Press the cover fully into position and fasten every retaining clip by hand.
- No fastener torque specification applies because the filter housing uses hand-operated clips.
Step 8: Perform a Final Inspection
- Use the LED flashlight to inspect the entire housing seam.
- Confirm there are no gaps and no section of the filter seal is pinched outside the housing.
- Check that the intake hose and nearby electrical connectors were not disturbed.
✅ After Repair
- Remove all tools and packaging from the engine compartment, then close the hood securely.
- Start the engine and let it idle for approximately one minute.
- Listen for unusual hissing, which can indicate that the housing cover is not seated correctly.
- No scan-tool reset, battery registration, or infotainment procedure is required.
- Inspect the filter during routine servicing and replace it sooner when driving frequently in Haryana’s dusty conditions.
