🔧 Forte - Engine Air Filter Replacement

The engine air filter keeps dirt and debris from entering your Forte’s engine. Replacement is simple: open the air-cleaner housing, exchange the filter, and securely close the housing.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-15 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool before reaching into the engine compartment.
  • 🛑 Switch off the ignition, remove the key, and engage the parking brake.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnection is not required.
  • 🚫 Do not start the engine while the air-cleaner housing is open.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile mechanic gloves
  • ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses
  • LED inspection flashlight
  • Automotive shop vacuum with crevice attachment
  • Clean microfiber cloth

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🚗 Park your Forte on level ground, select neutral, engage the parking brake, and switch off the ignition.
  • 🌡️ Allow the engine to cool completely.
  • 📦 Remove the new filter from its packaging, but keep it clean and dry.
  • 🔍 The air-cleaner housing is the large black plastic box connected to the engine’s air-intake hose.
  • 📱 No infotainment setting, scan tool, or service mode is required.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Hood

  • Wear the ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses and nitrile mechanic gloves.
  • Pull the hood-release lever inside the driver’s footwell.
  • Release the secondary hood latch beneath the front edge of the hood.
  • Raise the hood and securely install its support rod.

Step 2: Locate the Air-Cleaner Housing

  • Use the LED inspection flashlight to locate the black plastic air-cleaner housing in the engine compartment.
  • Follow the large intake hose from the engine to the housing if needed.
  • Identify the retaining clips around the housing cover. These clips hold the upper and lower halves together.

Step 3: Release the Housing Cover

  • Use your nitrile mechanic gloves to pull each retaining clip outward until it releases.
  • Lift the cover slightly, then disengage its locating tabs from the opposite side of the housing.
  • Do not pull on the intake hose or any nearby wiring.
  • Move the cover only as far as needed.

Step 4: Remove the Old Filter

  • Use your nitrile mechanic gloves to lift the old engine air filter straight out.
  • Use the LED inspection flashlight to note how the filter’s sealing edge sits inside the housing.
  • Keep dirt from falling into the clean-air outlet leading toward the engine.

Step 5: Clean and Inspect the Housing

  • Use the automotive shop vacuum with crevice attachment to remove loose dirt, leaves, or insects from the lower housing.
  • Use the clean microfiber cloth to wipe the filter-sealing surface.
  • Do not push the cloth or vacuum attachment into the intake outlet.
  • Use the LED inspection flashlight to check that nothing remains inside the housing.
  • Never use compressed air near the intake.

Step 6: Install the New Filter

  • Use your nitrile mechanic gloves to place the new engine air filter into the lower housing in the same orientation as the old filter.
  • Make sure the filter’s rubber sealing edge lies flat and evenly inside its channel.
  • Use the LED inspection flashlight to check every edge for gaps, folds, or pinching.
  • Do not add oil or cleaner to the replacement filter.

Step 7: Close the Housing

  • Use your nitrile mechanic gloves to engage the cover’s locating tabs first.
  • Lower the cover evenly without shifting the filter.
  • Press the retaining clips into place by hand until each one locks securely.
  • Use the LED inspection flashlight to verify that the housing seam is fully closed on every side.
  • No torque specification applies because the housing uses hand-operated retaining clips.

Step 8: Close the Hood

  • Use your nitrile mechanic gloves to return the hood support rod to its retaining clip.
  • Lower the hood and let it latch securely.
  • Pull upward gently on the hood’s front edge to confirm it is locked.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start the engine and let it idle for approximately one minute.
  • 👂 Listen for an unusual hissing sound, which can indicate that the housing cover is not fully seated.
  • 🔍 Switch off the engine and recheck the retaining clips if the engine runs unusually or a warning light appears.
  • 📝 Record the replacement date and mileage for future maintenance.
