📋 Before You Begin

• 🅿️ Park your Escape on level ground, select Park, and apply the parking brake.
• Switch off the ignition and remove the key.
• Open the hood and support it securely.
• Locate the black plastic air-cleaner housing in the engine compartment. The housing contains the rectangular engine air filter.
• Clean loose dust from around the housing before opening it.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Inspect the Air-Cleaner Housing

• Use the clean microfiber cloth to wipe dirt from the housing cover and its edges.
• Identify the captive Torx screws around the cover. “Captive” means the screws remain attached to the cover after loosening.
• Check the connected intake tube and wiring. They normally do not need to be disconnected for this filter replacement.

Step 2: Loosen the Housing Cover

• Use the Torx T25 screwdriver to loosen each cover screw counterclockwise.
• Loosen the screws evenly until the cover is free. Do not force a screw after it becomes loose.
• Keep downward pressure on the screwdriver while turning.

Step 3: Lift the Cover

• Lift the housing cover only far enough to access the filter.
• Move the cover gently so the attached intake tube and electrical wiring are not stretched.
• Do not allow dirt or tools to fall into the clean-air outlet leading toward the engine.

Step 4: Remove the Old Filter

• Lift the old engine air filter straight out by hand while wearing nitrile work gloves.
• Notice the filter’s orientation and how its rubber edge sits inside the housing.
• Do not shake the dirty filter over the open housing.

Step 5: Clean and Inspect the Housing

• Use the clean microfiber cloth to wipe loose dust from the lower housing.
• Keep the cloth away from the open clean-air outlet.
• Inspect the housing for leaves, cracks, standing water, or damaged sealing surfaces.
• Do not use compressed air because it can push debris into the intake.

Step 6: Install the New Filter

• Place the new engine air filter into the lower housing in the same orientation as the old filter.
• Press gently around the filter’s rubber sealing edge until it sits flat and fully inside its channel.
• Make sure no corner is folded, raised, or trapped under the cover.
• A flat seal prevents unfiltered air from entering.

Step 7: Refit the Housing Cover

• Lower the cover squarely onto the housing without moving the filter.
• Check the entire seam by hand. The upper and lower housing halves must meet evenly.
• Use the Torx T25 screwdriver to start every captive screw by hand before tightening any one screw fully.

Step 8: Tighten the Cover Screws

• Use the Torx T25 screwdriver to tighten the screws evenly in an alternating pattern.
• Tighten each screw only until seated and snug. Ford does not require heavy clamping force on this plastic housing.
• Do not overtighten the screws because the plastic threads can strip.
• Confirm that the intake tube and nearby electrical connector remain fully attached.

• ✅ Remove the cloth and all tools from the engine compartment.
• Start the engine and let it idle for approximately one minute.
• Listen for a loud sucking or whistling sound, which can indicate that the cover or filter is not seated correctly.
• Switch the engine off and recheck the housing seam if the engine runs unusually or a warning light appears.
• Close the hood securely. No infotainment reset, scan-tool procedure, or filter coding is required.
