🔧 Sierra 1500 - Engine Air Filter Replacement
Replacing your Sierra 1500’s engine air filter keeps dirt out of the engine and helps it breathe properly. A clogged filter can reduce power and fuel economy, and it can make the engine run less smoothly.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the engine off and let it cool for 10 minutes before working near the fan and belts.
- ⚠️ Keep tools, fingers, and clothing away from the radiator fan area.
- ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Flathead screwdriver (medium)
- 8mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Sierra 1500 on level ground and shift to Park.
- Pop the hood and support it securely.
- Take a quick look at the air intake duct to find the air filter box (large black plastic box near the front/driver side).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the air filter housing
- Find the large black plastic air box with a big intake tube attached to it.
- The filter sits inside this box, usually held by metal clips and/or small screws.
Step 2: Open the air filter housing
- Release the metal retaining clips by hand (flip them open).
- If your air box uses screws instead of clips, use an 8mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet to loosen them.
- If a clamp or clip is stubborn, gently pry with a flathead screwdriver (medium).
- Don’t force it—plastic gets brittle with age.
Step 3: Lift the cover and remove the old filter
- Lift the top half of the air box enough to access the filter (you usually don’t need to remove the whole lid).
- Pull the old filter straight out.
- Take note of how it sits (the rubber seal edge should match the shape of the box).
Step 4: Clean the air box sealing surface
- Use a clean, dry rag (or your glove) to wipe dust and leaves out of the lower half of the air box.
- Do not let dirt fall into the intake tube opening.
Step 5: Install the new air filter
- Place the new filter into the lower air box exactly like the old one.
- Make sure the filter sits flat and the rubber seal is fully seated all the way around.
Step 6: Close and secure the housing
- Lower the air box lid back into position.
- Re-latch the metal clips by hand.
- If equipped with screws, tighten using an 8mm socket and 1/4" ratchet until snug (do not over-tighten; it’s plastic).
✅ After Repair
- Start your Sierra 1500 and let it idle for 20–30 seconds.
- Listen for any hissing/whistling that could indicate the air box isn’t fully closed.
- Take a quick look to confirm all clips/screws are secured and the intake tube is seated.
