🔧 Engine Air Filter - Replacement

The engine air filter keeps dirt and debris out of your engine. On your Silverado, this is a quick maintenance item that usually takes just a few minutes and can help keep throttle response and fuel economy consistent.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Make sure the engine is off and cool before opening the air box.
  • Keep loose dirt out of the air intake opening while the filter is removed.
  • Do not drive with the air box open or the filter missing.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Clean microfiber towel
  • Safety glasses
  • Gloves

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on a level surface and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key.
  • Open the hood and locate the air filter box on the engine bay.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the air filter box

  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to loosen any air box screws or release clips, depending on the style on your Silverado.
  • Lift the air box cover carefully and set it aside.
  • Keep dirt from falling inside.

Step 2: Remove the old air filter

  • Lift the old filter straight out of the air box by hand.
  • Check the air box for leaves, dust, or debris.
  • Use a clean microfiber towel to wipe out the inside if needed.

Step 3: Install the new air filter

  • Place the new engine air filter into the air box in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Make sure the filter seals all the way around the edges.
  • The filter should sit flat.

Step 4: Reinstall the air box cover

  • Set the cover back on the air box.
  • Use the flat-blade screwdriver to tighten any screws or re-secure the clips.
  • Make sure the cover is fully seated all the way around.

Step 5: Final check

  • Close the hood.
  • Start the engine and listen for any unusual air leaks or whistling.
  • If the engine runs normally, the job is complete.

✅ After Repair

  • Confirm the air box is fully latched or tightened.
  • Check that no tools or rags were left in the engine bay.
  • Inspect the old filter to see how dirty it was; that helps you judge future service intervals.
