🔧 Focus - Engine Air Filter Replacement
Replacing the engine air filter on your Focus helps the 2.0L engine breathe clean air and can improve throttle response, fuel economy, and long-term engine protection. This is one of the easiest first DIY jobs because the filter sits in the air cleaner box under the hood.

📋 Before You Begin
- 🚗 Place your Focus in neutral, set the parking brake, and open the hood.
- 🧊 Make sure the engine is cool enough to comfortably work around.
- 🔎 The air cleaner box is the black plastic box connected to the large intake tube near the front/side of the engine bay.
- 🧰 A flat-blade screwdriver is a simple straight-tip screwdriver used to release clips or gently help separate plastic covers.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Hood
- Use your hand to pull the hood release handle inside the cabin.
- Use your fingers to release the hood safety latch at the front of the hood.
- Raise the hood and support it securely with the hood prop rod.
- Make sure the hood is stable.
Step 2: Locate the Air Cleaner Box
- Use your eyes and hands to find the black plastic air cleaner box connected to the wide intake hose.
- The engine air filter sits inside this box.
- Do not pull on wiring or hoses around the box.
Step 3: Release the Air Cleaner Cover
- Use your fingers to release the metal or plastic retaining clips on the air cleaner cover.
- If a clip is tight, use a flat-blade screwdriver gently to help pop it loose.
- Do not force the plastic cover. It only needs to lift enough to remove the filter.
- Plastic tabs can crack if forced.
Step 4: Remove the Old Air Filter
- Use your hands to lift the air cleaner cover slightly.
- Use your hands to pull the old engine air filter straight out of the air cleaner box.
- Note the filter direction before removing it so the new one goes in the same way.
Step 5: Clean the Air Cleaner Box
- Use a shop vacuum to remove leaves, sand, or loose dirt from the lower half of the air cleaner box.
- Use a microfiber towel to wipe the sealing edge where the filter sits.
- Do not let dirt fall into the intake tube leading toward the engine.
- Clean sealing edges prevent air leaks.
Step 6: Install the New Air Filter
- Use your hands to place the new engine air filter into the lower air cleaner box.
- Make sure the rubber edge of the filter sits flat all the way around.
- The filter must not be bent, pinched, or sitting on top of the box edge.
Step 7: Reinstall the Air Cleaner Cover
- Use your hands to lower the air cleaner cover back into place.
- Make sure the cover tabs are seated correctly before locking the clips.
- Use your fingers to snap the retaining clips fully closed.
- If needed, use a flat-blade screwdriver gently to guide a stubborn clip.
Step 8: Final Check
- Use your hands to lightly tug the air cleaner cover and confirm it is secure.
- Check that no tools, towels, or debris are left in the engine bay.
- Close the hood firmly.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Start your Focus and let it idle for about 30 seconds.
- ✅ Listen for any unusual hissing sound from the air cleaner box area.
- ✅ If the engine sounds normal and the cover is clipped shut, the repair is complete.
- ✅ No scan tool reset or infotainment menu reset is required.
