š Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and shift to Park.
- Turn the car OFF and keep the key fob at least 10 feet away.
- Open the hood and let the engine bay cool for a few minutes if itās hot.
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the air filter box
- Use a flashlight and find the black plastic air box near the front/side of the engine bay, attached to the large intake tube.
- The air filter sits inside this box.
Step 2: Open the air filter box
- Use a Phillips screwdriver to loosen any screws (if equipped).
- Release the metal clips by hand (common on this Altima) and lift the air box lid up.
- Donāt force itācheck for missed clips.
Step 3: Remove the old air filter
- Wear nitrile gloves and pull the old filter straight out.
- Use a flashlight to look inside the lower air box for leaves or dirt.
Step 4: Clean the air box seating surface
- Use the flashlight and wipe the rim where the filter seals using a clean, dry cloth (shop towel).
- Make sure no debris will get trapped under the new filterās seal.
Step 5: Install the new air filter
- Place the new filter into the lower air box in the same orientation as the old one.
- Make sure it sits fully flat all the way around (this prevents unfiltered air leaks).
Step 6: Close and secure the air box
- Lower the lid carefully so it doesnāt pinch the filter.
- Re-latch the clips by hand and use a Phillips screwdriver to snug any screws (if equipped).
- If the lid wonāt sit, the filter isnāt seated.
ā After Repair
- Start your Altima and let it idle for 30 seconds.
- Listen for hissing/whistling near the air box (can indicate the lid isnāt fully clipped).
- Take a short test drive and confirm normal acceleration.
