๐ง Explorer - Engine Air Filter Replacement
The engine air filter sits inside the air-cleaner housing near the front driver-side corner of your Explorer. Replacing it restores proper airflow and helps keep dust and debris out of the engine.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-15 minutes
โ ๏ธ Safety & Precautions
- โ ๏ธ Turn the engine off and let it cool before opening the air-cleaner housing.
- ๐ Keep tools and loose objects away from the open intake passage.
- ๐ Battery disconnection is not required for this repair.
๐ง Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- LED flashlight
- Wet/dry vacuum with crevice attachment
- Nitrile work gloves
- Safety glasses
๐ฉ Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Panel-style engine air filter for 3.5L V6 - Qty: 1
๐ Before You Begin
- ๐ Park your Explorer on level ground, shift into Park, apply the parking brake, and switch off the ignition.
- ๐ก๏ธ Wait until the engine is cool enough to work around comfortably.
- ๐ก Open the hood and use the LED flashlight to locate the black air-cleaner housing near the front driver-side corner of the engine compartment.
- ๐งค Put on safety glasses and nitrile work gloves.
๐จ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Release the air-cleaner housing clips
- Use the LED flashlight to inspect the edge of the air-cleaner housing.
- Release the metal retaining clips by hand. A retaining clip is a spring latch that holds the housing lid closed.
- Do not pry the clips with a screwdriver; they should release with firm hand pressure.
Step 2: Raise the housing lid
- Lift the air-cleaner housing lid by hand just far enough to access the filter.
- Move the lid gently because the intake tube and airflow-sensor wiring remain attached.
- Do not unplug the airflow sensor or loosen the intake tube for routine filter replacement.
Step 3: Remove the old filter
- Note how the old filter sits in the lower housing, then lift it straight out by hand.
- Use the LED flashlight to check for leaves, sand, or other debris in the bottom of the housing.
- Keep all debris away from the clean-air opening leading toward the engine.
Step 4: Clean the lower housing
- Use the wet/dry vacuum with crevice attachment to remove loose debris from the lower housing.
- Do not push the vacuum attachment into the intake opening.
- Do not use compressed air because it can force dirt into the intake system.
- Never wipe dirt toward the engine opening.
Step 5: Install the new filter
- Place the new panel-style engine air filter into the lower housing by hand in the same orientation as the old filter.
- Use the LED flashlight to verify that the filterโs rubber sealing edge is fully seated in the housing channel.
- Check all four corners. The filter must lie flat without folds or gaps.
Step 6: Close the housing
- Lower the air-cleaner housing lid by hand while keeping the filter seal in position.
- Make sure the lidโs locating tabs engage the lower housing correctly.
- Press the lid down evenly and secure every metal retaining clip by hand.
- No torque specification applies because the housing uses hand-operated retaining clips.
Step 7: Perform a final inspection
- Use the LED flashlight to inspect the complete seam between the upper and lower housing.
- Confirm there are no gaps and no portion of the filter seal is pinched outside the housing.
- Check that the intake tube and airflow-sensor electrical connector were not disturbed.
โ After Repair
- โ Remove all tools from the engine compartment and close the hood securely.
- ๐ Start the engine and listen for a loud hiss or whistle that could indicate the housing is not fully closed.
- ๐ If the engine runs normally and no warning light appears, the replacement is complete.
- ๐ Inspect the filter during routine maintenance and replace it sooner when driving in dusty conditions.
