🔧 4Runner - Engine Air Filter Replacement

The engine air filter removes dust and debris before air enters the engine. On your 4Runner, replacement is a simple, tool-free job performed at the air-filter housing on the passenger side of the engine compartment.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the engine off and let it cool before reaching into the engine compartment.
  • Keep dirt, leaves, and tools out of the open intake housing.
  • Do not pull or place strain on the mass airflow sensor wiring attached near the housing lid.
  • Battery disconnection is not required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • LED inspection flashlight
  • Shop vacuum with crevice nozzle
  • Nitrile work gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter for 4.0L V6 - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your 4Runner on level ground, select Park, and apply the parking brake.
  • Switch off the ignition and remove the key from the vehicle.
  • Open the hood and support it securely.
  • Keep the new filter sealed until the old filter has been removed.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the Air-Filter Housing

  • Wear the nitrile work gloves and safety glasses.
  • Use the LED inspection flashlight to locate the large black plastic air-filter housing on the passenger side of the engine compartment.
  • Follow the wide black intake tube from the engine toward the housing if you have trouble finding it.

Step 2: Release the Housing Clips

  • Use your gloved fingers to release the metal retaining clips around the edge of the air-filter housing lid.
  • A retaining clip is a spring-loaded metal latch that holds the lid against the lower housing.
  • Move each clip fully away from the lid so it cannot catch while the lid is lifted.

Step 3: Lift the Housing Lid

  • Use both gloved hands to lift the housing lid only far enough to access the filter.
  • Move the lid gently because the intake tube and mass airflow sensor wiring remain attached.
  • Do not unplug the sensor or force the intake tube sideways.
  • Support the lid instead of hanging it by wiring.

Step 4: Remove the Old Filter

  • Use your gloved hands to lift the old engine air filter straight out of the lower housing.
  • Note the filter’s orientation before removing it completely.
  • Use the LED inspection flashlight to check the dirty side for heavy dust, leaves, moisture, or signs of rodent damage.

Step 5: Clean the Lower Housing

  • Use the shop vacuum with crevice nozzle to remove loose debris from the bottom of the housing.
  • Keep the vacuum nozzle away from the mass airflow sensor and intake opening.
  • Do not use compressed air because it can push dirt into the intake system.

Step 6: Install the New Filter

  • Use clean gloved hands to place the new filter into the lower housing in the same orientation as the old filter.
  • Make sure the filter’s rubber sealing edge sits flat and evenly inside its locating channel.
  • Use the LED inspection flashlight to inspect the entire perimeter for folded or trapped sealing material.
  • A raised seal can let unfiltered air enter.

Step 7: Close and Secure the Housing

  • Use both gloved hands to align the housing lid with its locating tabs and lower it squarely over the filter.
  • Do not force the lid. If it will not sit flat, reopen it and correct the filter position.
  • Use your gloved fingers to fasten every metal retaining clip securely.
  • No fasteners are loosened, so there is no torque specification for this repair.

Step 8: Perform a Final Inspection

  • Use the LED inspection flashlight to confirm the housing is closed evenly on every side.
  • Use your gloved hands to verify that the intake tube and mass airflow sensor connector remain secure.
  • Remove the tools and old filter from the engine compartment before closing the hood.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for approximately one minute.
  • Listen for a loud air-sucking or whistling noise, which can indicate an improperly seated housing lid.
  • Confirm that no warning lights appear on the instrument panel.
  • No scan-tool reset, programming, or infotainment procedure is required.
  • Inspect the filter periodically and replace it sooner when driving in dusty or off-road conditions.
