🔧 F-150 - Engine Air Filter Replacement

The engine air filter sits inside the air-cleaner box on the passenger side of the engine compartment. Replacing a dirty filter helps maintain airflow, fuel economy, and engine performance.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-15 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Allow the engine to cool before working under the hood.
  • Keep dirt, tools, and loose clothing away from the open intake.
  • Do not start your F-150 while the air-cleaner box is open.
  • Battery disconnection is not required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Portable vacuum with crevice attachment
  • Nitrile work gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean lint-free cloth

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter for 5.0L V8 - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your F-150 on level ground, shift into Park, engage the parking brake, and switch off the ignition.
  • Open the hood and wait until the engine is cool.
  • Locate the black air-cleaner box on the passenger side of the engine compartment.
  • Compare the new filter with the old filter before installation. Their dimensions and sealing edges must match.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the air-cleaner box

  • Put on the safety glasses and nitrile work gloves.
  • Release the metal retaining clips around the air-cleaner cover by hand. Pull each clip outward and away from the cover.
  • Lift the cover enough to access the filter. The intake tube normally has enough movement, so disconnecting it is unnecessary.
  • Do not pull on the wiring or the mass airflow sensor. The mass airflow sensor measures the air entering the engine.

Step 2: Remove the old filter

  • Note how the old filter sits inside the lower housing.
  • Lift the filter straight out by hand without shaking dirt into the clean side of the housing.
  • Use the clean lint-free cloth to cover the clean-air opening temporarily.
  • Keep debris out of the intake opening.

Step 3: Clean the filter housing

  • Use the portable vacuum with crevice attachment to remove leaves, sand, and loose dirt from the bottom of the housing.
  • Use the clean lint-free cloth to wipe the filter-sealing surface.
  • Remove the cloth covering the intake opening before installing the new filter.
  • Do not blow compressed air toward the intake or mass airflow sensor.

Step 4: Install the new filter

  • Place the new engine air filter into the lower housing by hand in the same orientation as the old filter.
  • Press lightly around the filter’s rubber sealing edge. It must sit flat without folds or gaps.
  • Do not add oil to a standard dry replacement filter.
  • A pinched seal can allow dirt into the engine.

Step 5: Close the air-cleaner box

  • Align the cover tabs with the slots in the lower housing by hand.
  • Lower the cover while checking that the filter remains seated evenly.
  • Secure every metal retaining clip by hand. Each clip should lock firmly over the cover edge.
  • Check around the complete housing seam. There should be no visible gap.
  • No fastener torque specification applies because the filter cover uses hand-operated retaining clips.

✅ After Repair

  • Remove all tools and the old filter from the engine compartment.
  • Start the engine and let it idle for approximately one minute.
  • Listen for a loud sucking or whistling sound, which can indicate an improperly closed housing.
  • If the check-engine light appears, switch off the engine and verify that the cover is fully seated and no sensor wiring was disturbed.
  • Check the filter during routine oil services and replace it sooner when driving in dusty conditions.
