📋 Before You Begin

• Park your Corolla on level ground.
• Shift to Park and apply the parking brake.
• Turn the ignition off and remove the key or keep the smart key away from the vehicle.
• Open the hood using the interior hood release, then release the hood safety latch at the front.
• The engine air filter box is on the driver-side/front area of the engine bay, connected to the large black intake tube.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the Air Filter Box

• Use a flashlight to find the black plastic air filter box in the engine bay.
• The air filter box has metal spring clips holding the lid closed.
• A spring clip is a small metal latch that snaps over the lid to hold it tight.
• Take a photo before opening.

Step 2: Release the Air Box Clips

• Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
• Use your fingers to flip the metal spring clips away from the air box lid.
• No socket or screwdriver is normally needed on your Corolla for the filter lid clips.
• Do not pull hard on the intake hose or wiring nearby.

Step 3: Lift the Air Box Lid

• Gently lift the air box lid by hand just enough to access the filter.
• Do not force the lid upward; the intake hose is still attached.
• Use a shop towel to wipe loose dust from the outside edge of the air box.
• Keep dirt from falling into the lower air box.

Step 4: Remove the Old Engine Air Filter

• Pull the old engine air filter straight out by hand.
• Notice the filter’s direction before removing it completely.
• Use a flashlight to inspect the lower air box for leaves or large debris.
• Use a shop towel to gently remove loose debris if needed.

Step 5: Install the New Engine Air Filter

• Place the new engine air filter into the lower air box by hand.
• Make sure the rubber seal sits flat all the way around.
• The filter should fit neatly without bending or forcing it.
• If it rocks, reseat it.

Step 6: Close the Air Box Lid

• Lower the air box lid by hand onto the new filter.
• Check that the lid sits evenly and does not pinch the filter seal.
• Use your fingers to snap the spring clips back into place.
• There are no torque specs for the spring clips because they lock by hand pressure.

Step 7: Final Visual Check

• Use a flashlight to check that the air box lid is fully closed.
• Make sure every clip is locked.
• Confirm no tools, towels, or packaging are left in the engine bay.
• Close the hood firmly.

• Start the engine and let it idle for about 30 seconds.
• Listen for any unusual hissing noise near the air filter box.
