🔧 Forester - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Replacing the engine air filter on your Forester is a simple beginner-friendly job. The air filter keeps dust and debris out of the engine, and a dirty one can reduce performance and fuel economy.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-15 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool before working near the air intake box.
  • ⚠️ Keep loose clothing, tools, and hands away from the cooling fans.
  • ⚠️ Do not run the engine with the air filter removed.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Shop towel
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Forester on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • 🔑 Turn the ignition fully off and remove the key.
  • 🌡️ Open the hood and let the engine cool if it was recently driven.
  • 💡 The engine air filter is inside the black plastic air cleaner box on the passenger side of the engine bay.
  • 📘 The air cleaner box is the plastic housing that holds the filter before air enters the engine.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Hood

  • Use your hand to pull the hood release inside the cabin near the driver footwell.
  • Use your hand to release the hood safety latch at the front center of the hood.
  • Use the hood prop rod to support the hood securely.
  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.

Step 2: Locate the Air Filter Box

  • Use a flashlight to look at the passenger side of the engine bay.
  • Find the black plastic air cleaner box connected to the large intake tube.
  • The box is held closed by metal spring clips.
  • Take a photo before opening it.

Step 3: Release the Air Box Clips

  • Use your hand to flip the metal retaining clips away from the air cleaner box cover.
  • A retaining clip is a small spring latch that holds the cover shut.
  • Do not force the clips with a screwdriver; they should release by hand.

Step 4: Open the Air Cleaner Box

  • Use both hands to gently lift and separate the upper half of the air cleaner box.
  • Move the cover only enough to access the filter.
  • Do not pull hard on the intake tube or nearby wiring.

Step 5: Remove the Old Air Filter

  • Use your hand to pull the old engine air filter straight out of the air cleaner box.
  • Use a shop towel to wipe loose dust from the lower air box.
  • Do not let dirt fall into the intake opening.
  • Dirty side usually faces downward.

Step 6: Inspect the Air Box

  • Use a flashlight to check the inside of the air cleaner box.
  • Remove leaves, large debris, or loose dirt using a shop towel.
  • Check that the rubber sealing surface is clean and flat.
  • The sealing surface is the edge where the filter sits to stop unfiltered air from leaking past.

Step 7: Install the New Air Filter

  • Use your hand to place the new engine air filter into the lower air cleaner box.
  • Make sure the filter sits flat all the way around.
  • The rubber edge must not be folded, pinched, or sitting outside the box.
  • No torque spec applies because there are no threaded fasteners for this filter service.

Step 8: Close the Air Cleaner Box

  • Use both hands to lower the upper air cleaner box cover back into place.
  • Check that the cover lines up evenly with the lower box.
  • Use your hand to snap the metal retaining clips back into the locked position.
  • Make sure each clip is fully seated and tight.

Step 9: Final Visual Check

  • Use a flashlight to inspect around the air cleaner box.
  • Confirm the air filter is not sticking out from the seam.
  • Confirm the intake tube is still attached and not cracked or loose.
  • Remove all tools and the shop towel from the engine bay.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start your Forester and let it idle for about 30 seconds.
  • 👂 Listen for hissing or whistling near the air cleaner box, which can mean the cover is not sealed.
  • 🔍 If the engine runs rough, turn it off and recheck that the filter is seated flat and the air box clips are locked.
  • 📅 Replace the engine air filter about every 30,000 miles, or sooner in dusty driving conditions.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $45-$90 parts + labor

DIY Cost: $15-$35 parts only

You Save: $30-$55 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.3 hours.
