🔧 Focus - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Replacing the engine air filter helps your Focus breathe properly and protects the turbocharged engine from dirt and debris. This is a simple maintenance job that only requires opening the air filter housing, swapping the filter, and making sure the housing seals correctly.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool before working near the air box and turbo intake tubing.
  • ⚠️ Keep dirt, leaves, and loose debris out of the air intake opening while the filter is removed.
  • ⚠️ Do not start the engine with the air filter removed.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Clean shop towel
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Focus on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • 🌡️ Turn the ignition off and let the engine cool for several minutes.
  • 🧤 Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • 📍 Open the hood and locate the air filter box on the driver-side/front area of the engine bay. The air filter box is the black plastic housing connected to the large intake tube.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Hood

  • Use your hand to pull the hood release inside the cabin, then release the safety latch under the hood.
  • Raise the hood and secure it with the hood prop rod.
  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe loose dust from the top of the air filter housing before opening it.

Step 2: Release the Air Filter Housing Clips

  • Use your fingers to release the metal spring clips around the air filter housing cover.
  • If a clip is tight, use a flat-blade screwdriver to gently pry the clip outward.
  • A spring clip is a small metal latch that holds the plastic air box cover closed.
  • Tip: Do not force plastic parts.

Step 3: Lift the Air Box Cover

  • Use both hands to carefully lift the air filter housing cover just enough to access the filter.
  • Do not pull hard on the attached intake tube or wiring nearby.
  • If the cover feels stuck, check that all clips are fully released before lifting again.

Step 4: Remove the Old Engine Air Filter

  • Use your hand to lift the old engine air filter straight out of the lower housing.
  • Use a clean shop towel to catch loose leaves or dirt around the filter edge.
  • Do not let debris fall into the open intake side of the housing.

Step 5: Clean the Lower Air Box

  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe dirt and leaves from the bottom of the air filter housing.
  • Do not push dirt into the intake opening.
  • If debris is heavy, lift it out carefully by hand while wearing nitrile gloves.

Step 6: Install the New Engine Air Filter

  • Use your hands to place the new engine air filter into the lower housing.
  • Make sure the rubber sealing edge sits flat all the way around.
  • The seal is the soft rubber border that prevents unfiltered air from entering the engine.
  • Tip: Flat seal equals clean airflow.

Step 7: Reinstall the Air Box Cover

  • Use both hands to lower the air filter housing cover back into position.
  • Make sure the cover sits evenly and does not pinch the filter seal.
  • Use your fingers to snap the metal spring clips fully closed.
  • If needed, use a flat-blade screwdriver to guide a stubborn clip into place gently.

Step 8: Final Visual Check

  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe the outside of the air box area.
  • Check that every clip is latched and the air box cover is flush.
  • Confirm no tools or towels are left in the engine bay.
  • No torque specification is required because this air filter housing uses clips, not service bolts.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start the engine and let it idle for about 30 seconds.
  • 👂 Listen for hissing or whistling near the air box, which may mean the cover is not sealed correctly.
  • 🔍 If the engine runs rough, turn it off and recheck that the filter is seated flat and the housing clips are fully closed.
  • 🗓️ Check the filter at each oil change, especially if driving in dusty areas.
