🔧 Impala - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Replacing the engine air filter keeps dirt out of your engine and helps maintain good power and fuel economy. On your Impala, the filter sits inside the black plastic air filter box (air cleaner housing) in the engine bay.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work with the engine off and cool to avoid burns.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers/tools clear of the radiator fans; they can turn on unexpectedly.
  • ⚠️ Do not start the engine with the air filter removed.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • Small flashlight
  • Clean shop towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and put the shifter in P.
  • Set the parking brake and open the hood.
  • Have a clean towel ready so no dirt falls into the air box.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter box

  • Use a small flashlight to find the black plastic air filter box near the front/side of the engine bay, with a large intake tube attached.

Step 2: Open the air filter box

  • If your air box uses metal latches, pop them open using a flat-blade screwdriver if needed. Most open by hand.
  • If your air box uses screws/bolts, loosen them with an 8mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet until the lid can lift.
  • Don’t force it—look for one more latch/screw.

Step 3: Lift the lid and remove the old filter

  • Lift the air box lid by hand (you usually don’t need to remove the intake tube).
  • Pull the old filter straight up/out by hand.
  • Use a shop towel to wipe dirt from the inside of the air box. Do not let dirt fall into the intake.

Step 4: Install the new air filter

  • Place the new filter into the air box by hand.
  • Make sure it sits flat and the rubber edge (seal) is fully seated all the way around. This seal is what keeps unfiltered air out.

Step 5: Close and secure the air filter box

  • Lower the lid back into place by hand, making sure it lines up evenly.
  • Re-latch the metal clips by hand (or with a flat-blade screwdriver if tight).
  • If equipped with screws/bolts, snug them with an 8mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet. Just snug—plastic strips easily.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and listen for any hissing/whistling that could indicate the air box lid isn’t sealed.
  • Re-check the latches/screws and that the lid sits evenly all the way around.
  • Write the date/mileage on the filter (use a pen) to track when you changed it.
