๐Ÿ”ง Expedition - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Replacing the engine air filter on your Expedition is a simple beginner-friendly job. The air filter keeps dirt and debris out of the turbocharged 3.5L engine, and a dirty filter can reduce airflow and fuel economy.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

โš ๏ธ Safety & Precautions

  • โš ๏ธ Park your Expedition on level ground and let the engine cool before opening the air filter box.
  • โš ๏ธ Keep loose clothing, jewelry, and tools away from the cooling fan and belt area.
  • โš ๏ธ Do not start the engine while the air filter or air box cover is removed.
  • โš ๏ธ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

๐Ÿ”ง Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4-inch ratchet
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Clean shop towel
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

๐Ÿ”ฉ Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

๐Ÿ“‹ Before You Begin

  • ๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ Place your Expedition in Park and set the parking brake.
  • ๐ŸŒก๏ธ Let the engine cool for at least 10 minutes if it was recently driven.
  • ๐Ÿ” Open the hood and locate the air filter box on the passenger side of the engine bay.
  • ๐Ÿ“ฆ The air filter box is the large black plastic housing connected to the wide intake tube.

๐Ÿ”จ Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the hood

  • Use your hand to pull the hood release lever inside the cabin near the driver footwell.
  • Use your hand to release the secondary hood latch at the front edge of the hood.
  • Raise the hood fully and make sure it is supported securely.

Step 2: Locate the air filter box

  • Look on the passenger side of the engine bay for the black air filter box.
  • The air filter box connects to the intake tube, which carries clean air toward the engine.
  • Take a photo before removing anything.

Step 3: Loosen the air box cover fasteners

  • Use an 8mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to loosen the air box cover screws.
  • These screws are usually captive, meaning they stay attached to the cover and do not fully come out.
  • If the cover has spring clips, use your hand or a flat-blade screwdriver to gently release them.
  • Do not force the plastic cover because it can crack.

Step 4: Lift the air box cover

  • Use both hands to carefully lift the air box cover just enough to access the filter.
  • You usually do not need to remove the intake tube.
  • If extra room is needed, use a flat-blade screwdriver to loosen the intake tube clamp slightly.
  • Do not pull hard on any sensors or wiring near the intake tube.

Step 5: Remove the old engine air filter

  • Use your hand to lift the old filter straight out of the lower air box.
  • Note which side faces up before removing it.
  • Check for leaves, dirt, or debris in the bottom of the air box.

Step 6: Clean the air box

  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe loose dust and debris from the lower air box.
  • Do not push dirt into the intake tube opening.
  • Do not spray cleaner inside the air box.
  • Keep dirt away from the engine intake.

Step 7: Install the new engine air filter

  • Use your hands to place the new engine air filter into the lower air box.
  • Make sure the rubber sealing edge sits flat all the way around.
  • The filter should not be bent, pinched, or sitting crooked.

Step 8: Reinstall the air box cover

  • Use both hands to lower the air box cover into place.
  • Make sure the rear tabs are seated before tightening the front screws or clips.
  • Use an 8mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to snug the cover screws evenly.
  • Torque to approximately 2-3 Nm (18-27 in-lbs) if using a small torque wrench.
  • If clips are used, snap them fully closed by hand.

Step 9: Recheck the intake tube

  • If you loosened the intake tube clamp, use a flat-blade screwdriver to tighten it securely.
  • Make sure the intake tube is fully seated and not twisted.
  • Check that no tools or towels are left in the engine bay.

Step 10: Close the hood

  • Use your hands to lower the hood carefully.
  • Let it latch fully, then gently pull up on the hood edge to confirm it is secure.

โœ… After Repair

  • โœ… Start your Expedition and let it idle for about 30 seconds.
  • ๐Ÿ‘‚ Listen for hissing or whistling noises, which can mean the air box cover or intake tube is not seated correctly.
  • ๐Ÿ” Reopen the hood and visually confirm the air box cover is closed evenly.
  • ๐Ÿงพ No scan tool reset or infotainment reset is required for this repair.
