🔧 Sentra - Engine Air Filter Replacement
The engine air filter sits inside the air cleaner housing, often called the airbox, on the driver’s side of the engine compartment. Replacing a dirty filter helps maintain proper airflow, fuel economy, and engine performance.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-15 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the engine off and let it cool before opening the hood.
- 🛑 Keep dirt and tools out of the open intake passage.
- 🔋 Battery disconnection is not required for this repair.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile work gloves
- ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses
- LED inspection flashlight
- Shop vacuum with 25mm crevice attachment

📋 Before You Begin
- 🚗 Park your Sentra on level ground, apply the parking brake, select first gear, and switch off the ignition.
- 🌡️ Wait until the engine compartment is cool enough to touch safely.
- 📦 Remove the new filter from its packaging, but keep it clean and dry.
- 💡 No infotainment setting, scan tool, or maintenance reset is required.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Hood
- Wear the nitrile work gloves and ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses.
- Pull the hood-release handle beneath the driver’s side of the dashboard.
- Release the secondary hood latch at the front edge of the hood, then raise the hood and secure it with the support rod.
Step 2: Locate the Air Cleaner Housing
- Use the LED inspection flashlight to locate the black plastic air cleaner housing on the driver’s side of the engine compartment.
- The air cleaner housing, or airbox, is the plastic enclosure connected to the engine by the large intake hose.
- Do not loosen the intake hose clamp; it is unnecessary for this filter replacement.
Step 3: Release the Housing Clips
- Use your gloved fingers to release the two metal retaining clips along the edge of the air cleaner housing cover.
- Move each clip away from the cover until it disengages.
- Lift the cover slightly and disengage its locating tabs without pulling or twisting the attached intake hose.
- No fastener torque specification applies because the cover uses hand-operated clips.
Step 4: Remove the Old Filter
- Use your gloved fingers to lift the old engine air filter straight out of the lower housing.
- Notice which side faces upward and how the filter’s sealing edge fits into the housing.
- Use the LED inspection flashlight to check that no leaves or loose debris are near the clean-air opening.
- Photograph the old filter position before removal.
Step 5: Clean the Lower Housing
- Use the shop vacuum with 25mm crevice attachment to remove loose dirt from the bottom of the housing.
- Keep the vacuum attachment away from the clean-air outlet leading toward the engine.
- Do not use compressed air; it can force dirt into the intake system.
Step 6: Install the New Filter
- Use your clean, gloved hands to place the new filter into the lower housing in the same orientation as the old filter.
- Confirm that the filter’s sealing edge sits flat and evenly inside its channel on all sides.
- Do not apply oil to the replacement filter; your Sentra uses a dry filter element.
- A pinched seal can allow unfiltered air inside.
Step 7: Close the Housing
- Use your gloved hands to engage the cover’s locating tabs first.
- Lower the cover carefully without moving or folding the new filter.
- Press the cover fully into place, then secure both metal retaining clips by hand.
- Use the LED inspection flashlight to verify that the housing seam is even and the filter seal is not visible.
- No torque is required for the retaining clips.
Step 8: Close the Hood
- Use your gloved hands to return the hood support rod to its storage clip.
- Lower the hood and let it latch from approximately 20-30cm above the closed position.
- Lift gently on the front edge to confirm that the hood is securely latched.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Start your Sentra and let it idle for approximately one minute.
- 👂 Listen for unusual whistling or rushing-air sounds, which can indicate that the housing is not fully closed.
- 🔍 Switch off the engine and recheck both retaining clips if the housing cover appears uneven.
- 🗓️ Inspect the filter during routine maintenance and replace it sooner when driving in heavy dust or construction conditions.
- 💻 No scan-tool reset, battery registration, or infotainment procedure is needed.
