🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Hood
- Use your hand to pull the hood release inside the cabin.
- Use your hand to release the hood safety latch at the front of the hood.
- Raise the hood and secure it with the hood prop rod.
- The air filter housing is the black plastic box on the passenger side of the engine bay.
Step 2: Release the Air Filter Housing Clips
- Use your hand to unclip the metal retaining clips around the air filter housing lid.
- A retaining clip is a spring-style latch that holds the plastic lid closed.
- Do not force the clips. They should snap open by hand.
- Tip: Count the clips before lifting.
Step 3: Lift the Air Filter Housing Lid
- Use your hand to gently lift the top half of the air filter housing.
- You do not need to remove the intake tube for a basic filter change.
- Lift the lid only enough to slide the old filter out.
- Be gentle with the plastic housing so it does not crack.
Step 4: Remove the Old Engine Air Filter
- Use your hand to pull the old engine air filter straight out of the housing.
- Look at how the filter sits before removing it fully.
- The rubber edge of the filter seals against the air box.
- Do not shake dirt into the open air box.
Step 5: Clean the Air Filter Housing
- Use a shop vacuum to remove loose leaves, sand, or dirt from the lower half of the air filter housing.
- Use a clean microfiber towel to wipe the sealing surface where the filter rubber edge sits.
- Do not push dirt toward the engine-side intake opening.
- Tip: A clean seal prevents dust leaks.
Step 6: Install the New Engine Air Filter
- Use your hand to place the new engine air filter into the lower housing.
- Make sure the filter sits flat all the way around.
- The rubber sealing edge must not be folded, pinched, or twisted.
- There are no bolts to torque for this filter housing.
Step 7: Close the Air Filter Housing
- Use your hand to lower the air filter housing lid into place.
- Make sure the lid sits evenly on the filter and housing.
- Use your hand to snap all retaining clips back into place.
- If a clip will not latch, reopen the lid and check that the filter is seated flat.
Step 8: Final Visual Check
- Use your hand to gently tug the housing lid and confirm it is secure.
- Use your eyes to check that no tools, towels, or packaging are left in the engine bay.
- Close the hood securely.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Start your Wrangler and let it idle for 30 seconds.
- 👂 Listen for any unusual whistling or air-sucking noise from the air box.
- 🔍 If you hear a leak noise, turn the engine off and recheck that the filter and lid are seated correctly.
- 📝 No scan tool reset or infotainment reset is required after replacing the engine air filter.
