🔧 Wrangler - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Changing the engine air filter on your Wrangler is a simple beginner-friendly job. The air filter keeps dust and debris out of the 3.6L engine, and a clean filter helps maintain proper airflow, fuel economy, and throttle response.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-15 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool before working near the air intake box.
  • ⚠️ Keep loose clothing, jewelry, and hands away from the engine fan area.
  • ⚠️ Do not start the engine while the air filter is removed.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Shop vacuum
  • Clean microfiber towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Wrangler on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • 🔑 Turn the ignition off and remove the key.
  • ❄️ Let the engine cool if it was recently driven.
  • 📦 Open the new air filter box and compare it to the old one before installing.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Hood

  • Use your hand to pull the hood release inside the cabin.
  • Use your hand to release the hood safety latch at the front of the hood.
  • Raise the hood and secure it with the hood prop rod.
  • The air filter housing is the black plastic box on the passenger side of the engine bay.

Step 2: Release the Air Filter Housing Clips

  • Use your hand to unclip the metal retaining clips around the air filter housing lid.
  • A retaining clip is a spring-style latch that holds the plastic lid closed.
  • Do not force the clips. They should snap open by hand.
  • Tip: Count the clips before lifting.

Step 3: Lift the Air Filter Housing Lid

  • Use your hand to gently lift the top half of the air filter housing.
  • You do not need to remove the intake tube for a basic filter change.
  • Lift the lid only enough to slide the old filter out.
  • Be gentle with the plastic housing so it does not crack.

Step 4: Remove the Old Engine Air Filter

  • Use your hand to pull the old engine air filter straight out of the housing.
  • Look at how the filter sits before removing it fully.
  • The rubber edge of the filter seals against the air box.
  • Do not shake dirt into the open air box.

Step 5: Clean the Air Filter Housing

  • Use a shop vacuum to remove loose leaves, sand, or dirt from the lower half of the air filter housing.
  • Use a clean microfiber towel to wipe the sealing surface where the filter rubber edge sits.
  • Do not push dirt toward the engine-side intake opening.
  • Tip: A clean seal prevents dust leaks.

Step 6: Install the New Engine Air Filter

  • Use your hand to place the new engine air filter into the lower housing.
  • Make sure the filter sits flat all the way around.
  • The rubber sealing edge must not be folded, pinched, or twisted.
  • There are no bolts to torque for this filter housing.

Step 7: Close the Air Filter Housing

  • Use your hand to lower the air filter housing lid into place.
  • Make sure the lid sits evenly on the filter and housing.
  • Use your hand to snap all retaining clips back into place.
  • If a clip will not latch, reopen the lid and check that the filter is seated flat.

Step 8: Final Visual Check

  • Use your hand to gently tug the housing lid and confirm it is secure.
  • Use your eyes to check that no tools, towels, or packaging are left in the engine bay.
  • Close the hood securely.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start your Wrangler and let it idle for 30 seconds.
  • 👂 Listen for any unusual whistling or air-sucking noise from the air box.
  • 🔍 If you hear a leak noise, turn the engine off and recheck that the filter and lid are seated correctly.
  • 📝 No scan tool reset or infotainment reset is required after replacing the engine air filter.
