📋 Before You Begin

• ✅ Open the hood and make sure the hood prop rod is fully seated.
• ✅ The engine air filter is inside the black plastic air filter box on the passenger side of the engine bay.
• ✅ A shop vacuum is used to safely remove loose dust from the air box without pushing dirt into the engine intake.
• ✅ Do not start the engine while the air filter is removed.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Hood

• Use your hand to pull the hood release lever inside the cabin, below the driver-side dash.
• Use your fingers to release the secondary hood latch at the front center of the hood.
• Raise the hood and secure it with the hood prop rod.
• Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.

Step 2: Locate the Air Filter Box

• Find the black plastic air filter box on the passenger side of the engine compartment.
• The air intake tube is the large black plastic tube running from the air filter box toward the engine.
• Take a photo first.

Step 3: Release the Air Filter Box Clips

• Use your fingers to unclip the metal retaining clips on the air filter box lid.
• A retaining clip is a spring-style latch that holds the air box lid closed.
• Do not use a screwdriver unless a clip is stuck, because the plastic air box can crack.

Step 4: Lift the Air Filter Box Lid

• Use both hands to gently lift the air filter box lid upward just enough to access the filter.
• Do not pull hard on the attached intake tube or wiring nearby.
• No bolts are removed for this Tacoma engine air filter service, so there are no torque specs for this step.

Step 5: Remove the Old Engine Air Filter

• Use your hand to lift the old engine air filter straight out of the lower air box.
• Notice the filter orientation before removing it fully.
• Check the old filter for heavy dirt, leaves, oil, or rodent debris.

Step 6: Clean the Air Box

• Use a shop vacuum with crevice nozzle to remove loose dirt, sand, leaves, or debris from the lower air box.
• Use a clean microfiber towel to wipe the sealing edge where the filter sits.
• Do not blow compressed air into the intake tube.
• Keep debris out of the intake.

Step 7: Install the New Engine Air Filter

• Use your hands to place the new engine air filter into the lower air box.
• Make sure the rubber sealing edge sits flat all the way around.
• The filter must not be folded, pinched, or sitting crooked.

Step 8: Close the Air Filter Box

• Use both hands to lower the air filter box lid evenly over the new filter.
• Make sure the lid tabs are seated correctly before clipping it closed.
• If the lid will not close easily, reopen it and reseat the filter.
• Do not force the lid closed.

Step 9: Secure the Retaining Clips

• Use your fingers to snap the metal retaining clips back into place.
• Confirm every clip is fully latched and the air box lid is sealed evenly.
• No fasteners are tightened during this repair, so no torque specification is required.

Step 10: Final Visual Check

• Use your eyes and hands to confirm the air intake tube is still connected and not pulled loose.
• Check that no tools, towels, or packaging are left in the engine bay.
• Close the hood firmly.
