📋 Before You Begin

• 🅿️ Park your Outback on level ground and turn the engine off.
• 🔑 Remove the key from the ignition so the engine cannot be started accidentally.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the hood

• Use your hand to pull the hood release inside the cabin, near the lower driver-side dash.
• At the front of the hood, release the safety latch by hand and raise the hood.
• Support the hood with the prop rod if equipped.

Step 2: Locate the engine air filter box

• Use a flashlight to find the black plastic air filter box on the driver-side front of the engine bay.
• The air box is connected to a large black intake tube. The intake tube carries filtered air into the engine.
• Take a photo before opening it.

Step 3: Release the air box clips

• Use your fingers to unclip the metal retaining clips on the air filter box.
• A retaining clip is a spring-style metal latch that holds the air box lid closed.
• Do not force the clips. They should flip open with light hand pressure.

Step 4: Open the air box lid

• Use both hands to gently lift and separate the air box lid from the lower half of the box.
• You do not need to remove the intake tube or any electrical connectors for a normal filter replacement.
• Open the lid only enough to slide the old filter out.

Step 5: Remove the old engine air filter

• Use your hand to pull the old engine air filter straight out of the air box.
• Notice the filter direction and how the rubber edge sits in the air box.
• If leaves or dirt are present, use a clean shop towel to carefully wipe the lower air box.
• Do not push dirt into the intake opening.

Step 6: Install the new engine air filter

• Use your hands to place the new engine air filter into the lower air box.
• Make sure the rubber sealing edge sits flat all the way around.
• The filter should not be pinched, folded, or sitting crooked.
• A flat seal prevents unfiltered air leaks.

Step 7: Close the air box lid

• Use both hands to lower the air box lid back into place.
• Check that the lid sits evenly against the filter and lower air box.
• If the lid does not close easily, reopen it and reseat the filter.

Step 8: Refasten the air box clips

• Use your fingers to snap the metal retaining clips back into the locked position.
• Confirm each clip is fully seated and holding the air box lid tight.
• No torque spec applies because these are hand-operated clips.

Step 9: Final visual check

• Use a flashlight to inspect the air box seam.
• Make sure the lid is fully closed and the filter seal is not sticking out.
• Remove all tools and towels from the engine bay before closing the hood.
