🔧 Sierra 1500 - Engine Air Filter Replacement

The engine air filter sits inside the air-cleaner housing at the front passenger side of the engine compartment. Replacing a dirty filter restores proper airflow and helps keep dust from entering your Sierra 1500’s 6.2L engine.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-25 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the engine off and allow hot engine-compartment parts to cool.
  • 🛑 Keep dirt, tools, and loose clothing out of the exposed intake housing.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnection is not required for this repair.
  • 🧤 Wear gloves and safety glasses while working under the hood.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Torx T25 bit socket
  • 1/4-inch-drive ratchet
  • 1/4-inch-drive 3-inch extension
  • Inch-pound torque wrench rated 20-100 in-lbs
  • Clean microfiber cloth
  • Nitrile work gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter for 6.2L gasoline engine - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Sierra 1500 on level ground, shift into Park, apply the parking brake, and switch off the ignition.
  • 🌡️ Open the hood and let the engine cool before touching components.
  • 📱 No infotainment menu, scan tool, programming, or service reset is required.
  • 🧹 Keep the replacement filter sealed until the air-cleaner housing is open.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the Air-Cleaner Housing

  • Wear the nitrile work gloves and safety glasses.
  • Stand at the front of your Sierra 1500 and find the large black plastic air-cleaner housing near the passenger-side front corner.
  • Identify the captive cover screws around the housing lid. “Captive” means the screws remain attached to the lid after loosening.

Step 2: Loosen the Housing Cover

  • Fit the Torx T25 bit socket and 3-inch extension onto the 1/4-inch-drive ratchet.
  • Turn each captive cover screw counterclockwise until it is fully loose.
  • Do not pry the lid or remove the screws from the cover.
  • Press downward lightly while loosening each screw.

Step 3: Lift the Cover

  • Set the 1/4-inch-drive ratchet aside and lift the air-cleaner cover only far enough to access the filter.
  • Move the attached intake tube gently. Do not pull on the wiring or disconnect the airflow sensor.
  • Do not allow dirt to fall into the clean-air outlet leading toward the engine.

Step 4: Remove the Old Filter

  • Lift the old engine air filter straight out by hand.
  • Notice how the filter’s sealing edge sits in the housing groove. The new filter must sit in the same position.
  • Inspect the old filter for heavy dust, leaves, moisture, or signs of rodent damage.

Step 5: Clean the Lower Housing

  • Use the clean microfiber cloth to wipe loose dust and leaves from the lower housing.
  • Keep the cloth away from the open clean-air outlet.
  • Do not blow compressed air into the housing or through the airflow sensor.

Step 6: Install the New Filter

  • Place the new engine air filter into the lower housing with its sealing edge seated evenly in the housing groove.
  • Run a gloved finger around the filter perimeter to confirm that no section is folded, raised, or pinched.
  • A raised seal can let dust bypass the filter.

Step 7: Refit and Secure the Cover

  • Lower the cover squarely over the filter without shifting the sealing edge.
  • Start every captive screw by hand using the Torx T25 bit socket and 3-inch extension, without the ratchet.
  • Tighten the screws evenly with the 1/4-inch-drive ratchet.
  • Finish each screw with the inch-pound torque wrench: Torque to 2.5 Nm (22 in-lbs).
  • Do not overtighten the screws; the plastic housing threads can be damaged.

Step 8: Perform a Final Inspection

  • Use the safety glasses and visually check that the housing lid is flush around its entire edge.
  • Confirm that no tools or cloths remain in the engine compartment.
  • Verify that the intake tube and airflow-sensor connector were not disturbed.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start the engine and let it idle for approximately one minute.
  • 👂 Listen for a loud hissing sound, which could indicate that the housing is not fully closed.
  • 🔍 Confirm that no warning lights appear and that the engine idles normally.
  • 📅 Record the replacement date and mileage. Inspect the filter at each oil change and replace it sooner in dusty conditions.
  • 🚫 Do not attempt to clean a disposable paper filter with compressed air or water.
