🔧 Pathfinder - Engine Air Filter Replacement

The engine air filter sits inside the air-cleaner housing on the driver’s side of your Pathfinder’s engine compartment. Replacing it restores proper airflow and helps keep dirt from entering the engine.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the engine off and let it cool before working under the hood.
  • ⚠️ Keep dirt, leaves, and tools out of the exposed intake opening.
  • ⚠️ Do not pull on the mass-airflow sensor wiring attached near the air-cleaner outlet.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnection is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • LED inspection flashlight
  • Shop vacuum with crevice attachment
  • Nitrile work gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter for 3.5L V6 - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 📍 Park your Pathfinder on level ground, apply the parking brake, select Park, and switch off the ignition.
  • 📍 Open the hood and support it securely.
  • 📍 Remove the new filter from its packaging, but keep it clean and dry.
  • 📍 No infotainment setting, scan tool, programming, or battery reset is required.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air-cleaner housing

  • Use the LED inspection flashlight to find the large black plastic air-cleaner housing on the driver’s side of the engine compartment.
  • Follow the wide intake tube from the engine toward the rectangular housing.
  • The mass-airflow sensor is the small electronic sensor mounted in the intake near the housing. Do not unplug or strike it.

Step 2: Release the housing clips

  • Wear nitrile work gloves and safety glasses.
  • Release the metal retaining clips around the air-cleaner housing by pulling each clip outward with your fingers.
  • No socket or screwdriver is required, and there are no fasteners to torque.
  • Keep one hand on the lid while releasing clips.

Step 3: Open the air-cleaner housing

  • Carefully lift the air-cleaner lid enough to expose the filter.
  • Move the lid only as far as the attached intake tube and wiring allow.
  • Do not sharply bend the intake tube or pull on the sensor connector.

Step 4: Remove the old filter

  • Lift the old engine air filter straight out by hand.
  • Use the LED inspection flashlight to inspect the lower housing for sand, leaves, or other debris.
  • Note how the filter’s rubber sealing edge sits in the housing before discarding it.

Step 5: Clean the housing

  • Use the shop vacuum with crevice attachment to remove loose debris from the bottom of the housing.
  • Keep the vacuum nozzle away from the intake outlet and mass-airflow sensor.
  • Do not use compressed air because it can push dirt into the intake.

Step 6: Install the new filter

  • Place the new engine air filter into the lower housing in the same orientation as the old filter.
  • Use the LED inspection flashlight to verify that the rubber sealing edge is fully seated around the entire housing.
  • Do not force, trim, oil, or bend the filter.
  • A flat seal prevents unfiltered air from entering.

Step 7: Close the housing

  • Align the lid with the housing tabs and lower it evenly by hand.
  • Check that the filter seal is not pinched between the two housing halves.
  • Push each retaining clip into its locked position by hand.
  • No torque specification applies because the housing uses retaining clips.

Step 8: Perform a final inspection

  • Use the LED inspection flashlight to confirm that the lid is seated evenly and every clip is secure.
  • Confirm that the intake tube and mass-airflow sensor connector were not loosened.
  • Remove the tools and old filter from the engine compartment, then close the hood.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start the engine and let it idle for about one minute.
  • ✅ Listen for a loud air-sucking or whistling sound, which can indicate an improperly seated housing lid.
  • ✅ Confirm that no warning light appears on the instrument panel.
  • ✅ If the check-engine light appears, switch off the engine and recheck the housing, intake tube, and mass-airflow sensor connector.
  • ✅ No filter reset, scan-tool procedure, or break-in period is required.
