This repair replaces the engine electric water pump, which moves coolant through the engine cooling system. On your Accord Hybrid, the pump is electrically controlled, so the job includes draining coolant, disconnecting the 12-volt battery, replacing the pump and seal, then refilling and bleeding air from the cooling system.

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the 12-volt battery negative cable before unplugging the electric water pump.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch orange high-voltage cables or orange hybrid connectors.
  • ⚠️ Do not put your Accord in READY mode while the cooling system is drained.
  • ⚠️ Support the vehicle with jack stands. A floor jack alone is not safe.
  • ⚠️ Coolant is toxic. Keep it away from children, pets, and drains.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Accord on level ground.
  • Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Let the engine bay cool until the radiator hoses are cool to the touch.
  • A torque wrench tightens bolts to an exact tightness so small aluminum parts do not crack or leak.
  • Raise the front with a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum and place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the proper front support points.
  • Disconnect the 12-volt battery negative cable using a 10mm socket.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the lower splash shield

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to remove the plastic push clips from the lower splash shield.
  • Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the splash shield bolts.
  • Lower the shield and set it aside.
  • Keep clips organized.

Step 2: Drain the coolant

  • Place a drain pan 3-gallon minimum under the radiator drain area.
  • Slowly remove the coolant reservoir cap by hand only when the engine is cold.
  • Use needle-nose pliers if needed to carefully loosen the radiator drain plug.
  • Allow coolant to drain until it slows to a drip.
  • Close the radiator drain plug by hand. Do not overtighten it.

Step 3: Access the electric water pump

  • From underneath, locate the electric water pump near the lower front side of the engine cooling circuit.
  • The electric water pump has coolant hoses and an electrical connector attached to it.
  • Place shop towels under the pump area to catch remaining coolant.

Step 4: Disconnect the pump connector

  • Press the connector lock tab by hand and unplug the water pump connector.
  • If the tab is stuck, use a flat-blade screwdriver gently to release it.
  • Pull on the plastic connector body, not the wires.
  • Go slow with old plastic.

Step 5: Remove the coolant hoses

  • Use hose clamp pliers to squeeze each spring clamp and slide it back on the hose.
  • Hose clamp pliers are made to squeeze factory spring clamps safely without slipping.
  • Twist each hose by hand to loosen it from the pump nipple.
  • If a hose is stuck, use a flat-blade screwdriver carefully at the hose edge to break the seal.
  • Pull the hoses off and point them into the drain pan 3-gallon minimum.

Step 6: Remove the old pump

  • Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket with a 3/8-inch ratchet and 3/8-inch extension to remove the pump mounting bolts.
  • Support the pump with one hand while removing the last bolt.
  • Remove the old pump from the vehicle.
  • Remove the old water pump O-ring or gasket.

Step 7: Clean the mounting surface

  • Use shop towels to wipe the mounting surface clean.
  • Do not use metal scrapers. They can scratch the sealing surface.
  • Make sure no old gasket material remains.

Step 8: Install the new pump

  • Install the new water pump O-ring or gasket onto the new engine electric water pump.
  • Position the pump by hand.
  • Start all bolts by hand first so the threads do not cross.
  • Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket with a torque wrench rated 5-50 Nm to tighten the bolts evenly.
  • Torque to 12 Nm (9 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Reconnect hoses and wiring

  • Push each coolant hose fully onto the pump fittings by hand.
  • Use hose clamp pliers to return each spring clamp to its original position.
  • Plug in the water pump electrical connector by hand until it clicks.
  • Gently tug the connector body to confirm it is locked.

Step 10: Refill coolant

  • Install a no-spill coolant funnel kit at the coolant fill point.
  • Slowly add Honda-compatible premixed blue coolant.
  • Fill the reservoir to the MAX line.
  • Reconnect the 12-volt battery negative cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Use a torque wrench rated 5-50 Nm to tighten the battery terminal.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).

Step 11: Bleed air from the cooling system

  • Keep the no-spill coolant funnel kit installed and partly filled.
  • Start your Accord and set the heater temperature to full hot with the fan on low.
  • Let the vehicle idle while watching for air bubbles in the funnel.
  • Add Honda-compatible premixed blue coolant as the level drops.
  • Wait until warm air comes from the vents and the coolant level stabilizes.
  • Turn the vehicle off and let it cool completely.

Step 12: Check for leaks and reinstall the splash shield

  • Use shop towels to dry the pump and hose area.
  • Start the vehicle and inspect around the pump for leaks.
  • Turn the vehicle off before reinstalling the shield.
  • Lift the splash shield into place by hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8-inch ratchet to install the bolts.
  • Use a torque wrench rated 5-50 Nm for final tightening.
  • Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
  • Install the plastic clips by hand or with the trim clip removal tool.
  • Raise the vehicle slightly with the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum, remove the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum, then lower it slowly.

✅ After Repair

  • After one full warm-up and cool-down cycle, recheck the coolant level.
  • Add Honda-compatible premixed blue coolant if the reservoir drops below the MIN mark.
  • Watch for overheating warnings, poor cabin heat, coolant smell, or puddles.
  • If a warning light appears, scan for cooling system fault codes before driving far.
  • Recycle old coolant at an approved fluid recycling center.
