🔧 Camry - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
You’ll be replacing the cabin air filter that cleans the air coming through the vents into your Camry. It sits behind the glove box and can be changed in a few minutes with simple tools.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🔸 Turn the ignition off and remove the key before starting.
- 🔸 Do not force the glove box; its plastic hinges and stops can crack if pulled too hard.
- 🔸 If you have allergies or dust sensitivity, wear a dust mask when handling the old filter.
- 🔸 No battery disconnect is required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 🔸Flashlight
- 🔸Shop vacuum
- 🔸Disposable gloves
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

- 🔸Interior trim wipe or mild cleaner - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- 🔸 Park the Camry on level ground, set the parking brake, and turn the ignition off.
- 🔸 Empty the glove box so nothing falls out when it drops down.
- 🔸 Open all doors or windows slightly if you are dust-sensitive.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and prepare the glove box
- 🔸 Open the glove box fully.
- 🔸 Remove any items from the glove box so they don’t block movement.
- 🔸 Use the flashlight to look at the right side of the glove box and locate the small arm (this is the damper that slows the glove box when it opens).
Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper arm
- 🔸 Gently push the side of the glove box in a bit with one hand to make space.
- 🔸 With your other hand, pull the small plastic damper arm off its pin on the glove box side. No tool is needed; just your fingers.
- 🔸 Let the damper arm hang freely; do not pull on its base.
Step 3: Release the glove box stops and drop the glove box
- 🔸 On both left and right sides of the glove box, you’ll see molded “stops” that keep it from dropping down.
- 🔸 Gently press inward on both sides of the glove box at the middle, so the sides flex past the stops.
- 🔸 Allow the glove box to swing down toward the floor. Support it with one hand so it doesn’t drop suddenly.
Step 4: Locate the cabin air filter cover
- 🔸 Behind the dropped glove box, use the flashlight to look straight ahead at the HVAC box (black plastic housing).
- 🔸 You will see a rectangular plastic cover with tabs on each side; this is the cabin air filter access door.
Step 5: Remove the cabin air filter cover
- 🔸 Squeeze or push the small tabs on both sides of the plastic cover with your fingers.
- 🔸 Pull the cover straight out and set it aside.
- 🔸 Note the orientation of any “UP” or arrow markings on the cover for reinstallation.
Step 6: Remove the old cabin air filter
- 🔸 Gently pull the old filter straight out toward you using both hands.
- 🔸 Keep it level so dust and debris don’t fall into the blower area.
- 🔸 Inspect the filter orientation; look for arrows that say AIR FLOW or UP and remember how it was installed.
- 🔸 Place the old filter in a trash bag immediately. Use disposable gloves if it is very dirty.
Step 7: Clean the filter housing area (optional but recommended)
- 🔸 Use the shop vacuum to gently vacuum any leaves or debris from the filter slot and surrounding area.
- 🔸 Do not push the vacuum nozzle far inside; stay near the opening.
- 🔸 Wipe around the opening with an interior trim wipe if it is dusty.
- Cleaning helps airflow and keeps dust down
Step 8: Install the new cabin air filter
- 🔸 Check the new filter for arrows:
- If it says AIR FLOW, the arrow should point down on the 2020 Camry.
- If it says UP, install it with that side facing up.
- 🔸 Slide the new filter straight into the slot, keeping it level and not bent.
- 🔸 Make sure it sits all the way in and the edges are not folded.
Step 9: Reinstall the cabin air filter cover
- 🔸 Align the cover with the opening, matching the original orientation.
- 🔸 Push it straight in until both side tabs click securely.
- 🔸 Give it a light tug to confirm it is locked in place.
Step 10: Reattach and close the glove box
- 🔸 Lift the glove box back up toward its normal position.
- 🔸 Gently press in on both sides again so the stops go back behind the dashboard edges, then release. The glove box should now open and close normally.
- 🔸 Reconnect the damper arm on the right side by pushing it back onto its pin with your fingers.
- 🔸 Open and close the glove box a few times to make sure it moves smoothly.
- 🔸 Put your items back into the glove box.
âś… After Repair
- 🔸 Start the engine and turn on the fan at different speeds to ensure normal airflow and no unusual noises.
- 🔸 Switch between recirculation and fresh air modes and check that air continues to flow well.
- 🔸 If you had a musty smell before, it may take some driving time for it to fade as fresh air passes through the new filter.
