🔧 Tucson - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Your Tucson’s cabin air filter cleans the air going through the heater and A/C. Replacing it helps reduce dust/pollen in the cabin and can improve HVAC airflow if it’s getting weak.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.4 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- ⚠️ Don’t force the glove box—plastic tabs can snap if bent too far.
- ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight
- Plastic trim tool set (specialty)

- Cabin air filter - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Move any items out of the glove box so nothing falls out.
- Have a trash bag ready—the old filter can be dusty.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and empty the glove box
- Open the glove box fully and remove contents by hand.
- Use nitrile gloves and safety glasses if you’re sensitive to dust.
Step 2: Unhook the glove box damper
- On the right side of the glove box, find the small “damper” arm (a little plastic/metal slow-down strap that keeps the glove box from dropping fast).
- Gently pop the damper off its pin by hand, or use a plastic trim tool set (specialty) to help pry it off carefully.
- Go slow—this clip is easy to crack.
Step 3: Lower the glove box past the stops
- Look for the glove box “stops” (the plastic tabs on the left and right that hit the dash opening).
- Use your hands to press the glove box sides inward so the stops clear the dash opening.
- Let the glove box swing down gently.
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter cover
- Behind the lowered glove box, locate the rectangular cabin filter door/cover.
- Use your fingers to squeeze the cover tabs and pull the cover off. Use a flashlight if visibility is tight.
Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter
- Slide the old filter straight out by hand.
- Note the airflow direction marking on the filter (usually an arrow). This tells you which way air flows through it.
Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter
- Compare the new filter to the old one to confirm it matches in size.
- Install the new filter with the airflow arrow pointing the same direction as the old one (or matching the airflow marking on the HVAC housing if shown).
- Slide it in straight so the filter frame doesn’t fold.
Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box
- Reinstall the filter cover by hand until it clicks into place.
- Lift the glove box back up, press the sides inward again, and let the stops go back into position.
- Reconnect the damper arm by hand (it should snap back onto its pin).
âś… After Repair
- Start the engine and run the blower on medium, then high, to confirm airflow is normal.
- Switch between fresh air and recirculate to ensure the glove box area doesn’t rattle.
- If you notice a musty smell, consider using an A/C evaporator cleaner (optional) at your next service.
