đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and make sure the car is OFF.
- Move the front passenger seat back for more room.
- Empty the glove box so nothing falls out.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and “drop” the glove box
- Open the glove box fully by hand.
- Use your hands to press the left and right sides of the glove box inward so the built-in “stops” clear the dashboard opening.
- Let the glove box swing down slowly.
- Tip: Press one side at a time if tight.
Step 2: Unhook the glove box damper (if equipped)
- On the right side, look for a small “damper” arm (a little plastic shock/strap that slows the glove box).
- Use the trim clip tool (specialty) to gently pop the damper end off its pin, or use your fingers if it slides off easily.
- Tip: Don’t pry hard—light pressure only.
Step 3: Remove the cabin filter cover
- Behind the lowered glove box, locate the rectangular cabin filter housing.
- Pinch the cover tabs (usually one on each side) with your fingers and pull the cover straight off.
- Use a flashlight if the tabs are hard to see.
Step 4: Remove the old filter
- Slide the old cabin filter straight out.
- Keep it level so debris doesn’t dump into the blower housing.
- With nitrile gloves on, check the housing for leaves/dirt and remove any loose debris by hand.
Step 5: Install the new filter (correct direction)
- Look for the airflow arrow on the new filter frame.
- Install it with the arrow pointing DOWN (toward the floor), which matches the airflow direction on the Insight’s HVAC box.
- Slide the filter in until it seats fully and sits flat (not bent).
Step 6: Reinstall the cover and glove box
- Reinstall the filter cover and press until both tabs click.
- Reattach the glove box damper (right side) by pushing it back onto the pin.
- Lift the glove box up and again press the sides inward to pass the stops back into place.
âś… After Repair
- Start the car and run the blower fan at all speeds to confirm strong airflow and no rattles.
- Switch between fresh air and recirculation to make sure the door operation sounds normal.
- If you still have musty odor, consider cleaning the HVAC intake area at the base of the windshield.
