🔧 Equinox - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

The cabin air filter cleans the air coming into the passenger compartment. On your Equinox, it is accessed behind the glove box, so this job is quick and beginner-friendly. Replacing it helps restore airflow and reduce dust, odors, and musty smells.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the ignition off before starting.
  • Keep the glove box area clear so nothing falls into the HVAC housing.
  • Do not force the glove box stops or side tabs; they can crack easily.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Flashlight
  • Trim tool (specialty)
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key or shut the vehicle fully down.
  • Open the front passenger door for better access to the glove box area.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the glove box

  • Use your hand to open the glove box and empty it first.
  • Tip: Removing everything makes the job much easier.

Step 2: Release the glove box stops

  • Use your hands to gently squeeze the sides of the glove box inward so the stops clear the dash opening.
  • Lower the glove box carefully until it hangs down.
  • If needed, use a trim tool (specialty) to gently help release any tight tabs.

Step 3: Remove the cabin filter cover

  • Use your hand to remove the access cover behind the glove box.
  • On this vehicle, the cover usually comes off by releasing small tabs.
  • Set the cover aside where it will not get lost.

Step 4: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Pull the old filter straight out using your hand.
  • Note the airflow direction arrow on the old filter before removing it.
  • Tip: A flashlight helps you see the arrow and filter position.

Step 5: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Slide the new filter into the housing with the airflow arrow pointing the same way as the old one.
  • Make sure the filter sits flat and fully in place.

Step 6: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Use your hand to reinstall the filter cover until it clicks into place.
  • Lift the glove box back into position and press the sides inward to clear the stops.
  • Close the glove box slowly and make sure it operates smoothly.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the blower fan on and check airflow from the vents.
  • Listen for any rattles from the glove box area.
  • If airflow is still weak, confirm the filter is seated correctly and not folded.
