šŸ”§ Colorado - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your Colorado’s cabin air filter cleans the air going through the HVAC system (heat/AC). Replacing it helps airflow and reduces dust, pollen, and odors inside the cab.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working near the passenger airbag area.
  • āš ļø Don’t force the glovebox; plastic tabs can crack if bent too far.
  • āš ļø Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Plastic trim removal tool (specialty)
  • Flashlight

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your Colorado on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Move the passenger seat back for more room.
  • Empty the glovebox so nothing falls out.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and clear the glovebox

  • Open the glovebox fully and remove any items inside.
  • Use nitrile gloves to keep the new filter clean.

Step 2: Lower the glovebox door

  • Locate the glovebox ā€œstopsā€ (the plastic tabs that keep it from dropping down).
  • Gently push in on both sides of the glovebox (near the stops) to let the door swing down farther.
  • If a small damper strap is present on the right side, carefully pop it off using a plastic trim removal tool (specialty). Go slow to avoid breaking clips.

Step 3: Remove the cabin filter access cover

  • Behind the glovebox you’ll see the cabin filter housing cover.
  • Use a flashlight to see the cover tabs clearly.
  • Release the tabs by hand, or gently with the plastic trim removal tool (specialty), then pull the cover off.

Step 4: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Slide the old filter straight out.
  • Keep it level as you pull it out to reduce spilled debris.

Step 5: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Check the airflow arrow on the filter frame (it must point the correct direction).
  • Slide the new filter into the housing the same way the old one came out (don’t bend it hard).
  • If the filter has a soft foam edge, make sure it seats evenly all the way around.

Step 6: Reassemble the glovebox

  • Reinstall the housing cover and press until the tabs click in place.
  • Reconnect the damper strap (if equipped) by pressing it back onto its pin.
  • Lift the glovebox door back up and push in the sides again so the stops pass back into position.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start your Colorado and run the fan on medium to confirm airflow is normal and there are no rattles.
  • Switch between fresh-air and recirculation modes to make sure the glovebox area stays quiet.
  • If there’s a musty smell, run the A/C for a few minutes on fresh air.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $70-$140 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$40 (parts only)

You Save: $55-$100 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.5 hours.
